Ive got the shit standard yellow halogen headlights, would love xenons but such a ball ache to retro fit, so will probably end up going for HIDs if I can ever understand how to fit them, not very good with car electrics.

We have same thoughts. When thinking about fixing ballast, though it maybe a very easy job for some skillful DIYers, I am still a little afraid to make any attempt.

On a facelft it's as easy ....well apart from making a hole.....but that's as hard as it gets

If you have a facelift with projectors you would need at most

A method of making a large hole in the removable access cover in the back of the lights. Large spade drill bit works. You can skip this bit if you can crush the ballast into the headlight

Something to tighten the bolt that holds the ballast down

Fingers to push some wires in....need to check polarity of lights though

The odd tie wrap to tidy some cables if you don't like them messy

That's it

Non projector lights.....different kettle of fish

I and a few others have mounted the ballast outside of the headlight by simply bolting (bolts are supplied) it to either the strut tower or wings (for other things not used in diesels) nearby. This means you have to cut a hole for wires to come in and out of the headlight. The wires supplied are designed to do that and come with a grommet.

One other on here managed to pack it all inside the headlight for a clean look. It was said to be easy, I couldn't be bothered and just threaded the supplied cables through a cut hole in the back plate, the bit that comes off when you need to get at the bulb.

ps....I forgot to say

APART from drilling a hole (or not) in the headlamp backplate you need to either modify the existing tin plate bulb holder or get one that has alreaady been modded

These are the bits

If you have H7 bulbs they may be held in with clips like these except they aren't split

You either split your own (with a dremel) or get/buy some that are already split or get the HID supplier to throw some in

It need to be split to pass over the HID bulb wires

Did this on my FIL's car before it was 'taken' - ask for the supplier to throw these in anyway. Saves you faffing and wasting time.

Unfortunatley, I have non projector lights, mine are normal glass lights with the minging orange bit in for the indicators, is it harder for me then?

yes. The way the light is dispersed in non projector lights will mean that if you get a hid kit the light will be thrown all over the place.

the easiest thing to do would be to switch the units. iv just done this myself and was easy enough.

or get a a H7R kit which will give the light a 'cut off' point, and will stop it from shining everywhere...

Would love to buy new depo or similar lights, but everytime I have a spare £230, something either breaks or pops up instead.

no mate, your not the only one.. lol
I did have £1500 saved up for either towards a nicer car or to towards mods like remap, exhaust etc, but the boiler decided to have a major hissy fit, so that money and more went on a new boiler and fitment.  :(
