I asked for this Petrol v Diesel chat to be split from the original X5M thread because I thought it held interest for quite a few people with very different points of view. So lets not let this one decend into  :bangin: each other :ok:

In my opion it all depends on the vehicle you are in ...
Our E70's are large, heavy chunks of metal with big wheels to fit ...
It is by no means a sportive car or has sportive handling, no matter which trim we are talking about (I drive a 40d with adaptive sustpension & steering). Although it can corner a bit better than most other SUV's, in the end it is still an SUV which is at its best on the highway or for straight line accelerations.

Personally I prefer the power distribution of the diesel engine in these types of vehicles, with low end with loads of torque. Or if price and taxes were no issue, a HEMI 5.7 engine which shares these same characteristics.

Performance Petrol engines with a ton of HP like in the M series sure are fun, but don't suit the car as well in my opinion ... But in a vehicle with a much lower point of gravity ans suspension to match ... sure  :mario:

Hmmm, I've owned both a tuned E60 530d and E60 M5 which is quite a good comparison as both engines were contained in the same (in essence) vehicle. The diesel is a stonker and as has been stated they have come on in leaps and bounds from tractors of old. The diesel provides great performance an abundance of torque and with the right mods (mines was on upgraded suspension, ARB's, big brakes, etc, etc) and although it shocked a few round The Ring it just couldn't keep the power/torque when you needed it. A manual gearbox may of helped but it kind of defeats the proper marriage between a decent Diesel engine and an auto box.

Also although the sound deadening is superb for the cabin outside you still know its a diesel as no leaps in technology have been able to address that.

I understand the TT of even newer models helps but there is also the issue that unless you are Eli the mileage it's actually no cheaper to run.

Moving to the M5, the torque was on par with the diesel although its obviously a massively enlarged capacity to achieve it over the equivalent torqued diesel but it pulled far better, was more exciting/fun, handled better even from stock, grabbed more attention and generally was just around MORE.

OH and I forgot to mention the SOUND. Seriously To Die For.

As I mentioned in the other thread re the RS models, they are just an alround better package and hence why they are better depending on your circumstance and usage.

If someone were to offer me either the X5M or 50d for example I'd be in a real tis over which one to choose but it wouldn't be down to the factor one was a petrol and the other a diesel it would be down to many other factors we have to take into consideration.

However if the diesel were just a 30d then no contest as the M will always come out on top.

The main thing I miss about these big diesels is not being able to get one with a manual transmission.  That way the driver really has so much more control and can make sure that the engine is running at optimum rpm for any manoeuvring/pressing on without having to wait those extra fractions of a second whilst the torque converter and related electronics thinks about the request from my right foot.  Our E46 with the 30d engine and a manual box is great for that because there is no delay, and if you time it right then the turbo is also spun up to higher rpm so providing the extra oomph much earlier.  Turbo lag is less of an issue now I know (and that's true of the twin and triple set-ups in the X5/6).  If I put my foot down in the right gear it's away!!  OK being rear wheel drive helps too - except in dodgy weather when it's a little to keen to swap ends - but that manual box to me makes a big difference to the enjoyment that even a current 8-speed box cannot match.  You can't easily 'block change' with a steptronic auto the way you can in a manual either.  I know the 8-sp can shift from M8 to M2 in one shift, but........it still needs lots of pulling on the paddles whereas a manual you just move the lever once!!

e46 330cd vert was a rare car in 30d terms, never came with a auto option. Clearly manual is the prefered option for pressing on through corners, having just come back from another blast in the 125d and using all auto box options it was still found wanting. The biggest area of issue was corner entry no matter which set up I used I struggled to set the car up for a progressive exit. However once out of the corner the thing was gone  :o there is no doubting these twin/triple engings a amazing and I would suggest the 8 speed A is the only way to go in non 'X' models.

It couldn't pass the Euro4 emissions with an Auto, hence manual only.  And we're hanging onto ours!!  It's too much fun to drive.. :drive:

Reminds me I need to service it now it's in 'storage'.

I do think its personal preference some like the low end shove & awesome overtaking ability of a diesel while others enjoy revving an engine out & getting the rewards for it, I wouldn't say no to a drive of either the 50d or X5M  8)

I understood it to be a kerd weight issue, also interesting that there isn't a 35d e93. Surely that engine/auto box set up was used in loads of guises around 2005?

As for getting your vert out, best hurry up, summer is almost over  ::) has been nice to be back in a vert, iIhave to say  8)

Chompers, I was surprised too that there was no Auto for the 330CD MSport vert, and it was the dealer who said it was an emissions problem as the model went into production after the cut-off for meeting EU4.  I think there was an auto in the other versions of the 330CD like the coupé and saloon (?) so the extra weight of the structural supports in the 'vert' may have tipped it too far

Ours is SORN'd and needs 'bringing back to operational life' ie money spending on buying the tools etc to service it, MoT and insurance....so it's going nowhere.  The arrival of our little one has rather pushed the dates back a wee bit.... :(
