Insurance.....................It really should't be this difficult.

Post by Nat » Tue Apr 23, 2013 10:05 pm

So the E53 has gone to pastures new and the new E70 arrives soon. I need to get the insurance sorted , so I  decided to call my current insurer to see what the cost of change will be if any .
The lady goes through the usual blurb, name , address, details etc etc and she gets to the car bit.
What's the reg ? I tell her................nah , computer says naaaahhhh .Well its new, so maybe your computer hasn't got it yet.  Ok we do it a different way, whats the make and model sir ? ...BMW X5 40d SE.......    Is it a M sport ? No. Its an SE . Is it a sport then ?  No its an SE . Its an X3 ? NO . Its an X5 40 d SE. Is it a 3 litre ?  Yes, but .......never mind Yes its a 3 litre.  So its a 3.0 diesel FE  ? No its a 40d SE X5 . Is that foxtrot echo ? No , SE as in Sierra Echo . Oh , I think this is it ...........( I think to myself ffs this is going to take ages ). Any modifications ? NO  Any extras ? Yes .....  OK  you have to list them ? What every one ? Yes .  Ok......staring with the paint........... colour Azurite Black . So its black then ? No its blue black. they call it azurite black .Is that extra ? Yes , azurite black was £1500 extra. Oh . Anyfink else ?
Yes , 20" 214 alloys with the dynamic package . Nah , can't find that. ( Grrrr )  try media package. Nah . Listen do I really  have to list every extra ? Yea............... cos we tell the underwriter and he decides whether he wants to insure you or not. How about you tell the underwriter that its a 40d SE with £12,362.00 worth of extras. No sorry , I have to list them . Tell you what , I know you are just doing your job, but its just too difficult. Its a BMW SE not a bugatti veyron. The underwritter should know what a media package or a dynamic package is.  So that you know , I have got 27 quotes from compare the fkg meerkat and none of them want to know which hand I wipe my arse with. Thanks for your help, just send me proof of my no claims entitlement please. Oh ok then. Fanks for calling. Anyfink else I can help you wiv this evening sir. NAH FANKS LUV.
So I go to compare the fkg meerkat..and then the small print hits me.
The car is the family car. In the 19 years I have been married, the cars are all registered in my name and we are both named drivers on the policy. We both chose the car but its for my wife to drive. Now I've never had any of this nonsense of  ........... I am the main driver or is she  the main driver.  We are equal drivers , as in either of us can drive at any time we feel like it and not on a pro-rata or some other sub divided basis. Aparently because parents have been insuring their kids cars as theirs and put little johnny as an aditional driver when in fact its little johnnys car really , ( to get a cheaper premius because its farking outrageous )we are all having to state who is the main driver . Now I have to decide who is the main driver. So I work mon-fri in london and don't drive to work . However I might drive in the evenings. I certainly drive at w-ends and other than when I am incapacitated if I am not at work and we all go out I  drive. However whilst I am at work for 5 days a week my wife is the one using the car. So which one is the main driver then ? Seriously.? Someone help me out here .  I have absolutely no fkg idea. On a day basis she has it 5 days a week as oposed to me who has it 2 days a week. I can drive evenings during the week just as much as she can. So she is the main driver.  However at weekends I generaly drive and we tend to go out more so based on mileage am I the main driver ? Could be.  If we do it by mileage it may be me , if we do it  by time then it may be the wife . If the wife has gone to school to pick the kids up then it may be her based  on mileage. Depends how many times she goes. FFS, now we have an issue because whatever I say the insurance company could wriggle out of it. I am seriously unsure of what to put down. Can I  talk to someone and ask ? Of course not.  So much insurance is done online and you have to find the correct section for which person is the main driver and there isn't an option to say both are equal. So there you have it, looks like I will be spending hours on the phone trying to talk to someone somwhere trying to get the correct policy the old fashioned way , so as not to fall foul of the false insurance declaration, which genuinely I am struggling to complete. If I have no luck I shall stick the wife down as the main driver on the basis I am at work 5 days a week.
I am now looking for a policy/ insurance company  that can use some common sense and apply it .
What a frustrating evening I've had.

Regards,

Nat.

And breathe......

Tbh the main driver thing, just put her down and you second as your wife will be using it more time based as in all during the week etc. Even if you do drive it throughout the week you are both still insured to drive it so don't panic.

Never, ever accept a renewal from a insurance company!!!! The genaral reckoning is that 1 in 3 do and its costing them a small fortune. Always use a comparison site and then go direct to the one you think suits you best, checking via a cash back site first as well  ;)

I was quite impressed with the Admiral renewal when I spoke to a nice lady there. Got it down to a grand for all 5 cars, including the Polo with my daughter as main driver and my son as named driver on it.
