Do I need a new rear wiper arm?

Post by Steve Blackdog » Wed Apr 17, 2013 11:12 pm

Hi folks,

I have just replaced all of my wiper blades with new Bosch ones.  Suddenly everything is looking very clear.

However, the top of the rear wiper is still jumping and not gripping the screen.  I have previously tried lubricating the joint on the rear wiper arm with WD40 as it was badly crudded up.  I am now thinking it must be corroded as it clearly isn't putting the right pressure on the back screen. What I find odd is that the arm still appears to be doing it's job, but obviously it isn't.

Do you think I need a new arm or is there something else?  If so I can get one for £25 posted on FleaBay, or is there a better place to get one?

All help gratefully received.

Steve

I've found that on both my X5 and a previously owned LR Disco, any other wiper apart from stealer purchase would not clean the top part of the rear window. As soon as I paid stealer prices and put 1 of those on.......perfection.

Was that a whole new arm or just the blade? Stratstone are selling the arm for £25 posted.

@Lez

Is there any advantage in fitting the E70 arm apart from the more modern look?

Cheers

No advantage, except looks great, works fine, mounting nut hidden without need for a blanking plug.
So that will do me !! (Someone else recommended this seller, I am very happy)

The rubber blade and the metal it attaches to. Not the metal that is attached to the car.

I thought you'd all appreciate an update.

I have replaced both the rear wiper blade and the rear wiper arm and there is still a spot at the top of the screen that it jumps over.  GRRR.

My only thought is that as the motor bearings have worn over the years there is play in the spindle - it would only need a tiny amount to reduce pressure on the blade tip.  But what I don't understand is that the blade cleans perfectly at the edge of the arc everywhere apart from the six inch area at the top.

Any thoughts welcome.

Mmm.  Not sure as this is something that has just arisen.  Maybe there's oil on the glass.  It must be something.

when i got my car it was doing the same, i found however that the wiper blad was hitting the centre brake light and that was causing the problem.

i found that the insert was fitted with the locking clip at the arm pivot end, so i turned it around so that the blade fitted in the oppersite way now works perfectly
