selecting DRIVE
selecting DRIVE
car goes from reverse straight into drive when selected. but yesterday it wouldn't go from neutral into drive when selected? please tell me this isn't an expensice repair? >:D
Re: selecting DRIVE
I am sure being more experience than i with these cars and it may sound a stupid comment
but you did have your foot on th footbrake and you pressed the button on the gear lever before putting car from neutral into drive?
In which case not sure, but has your car been sitting and was cold as on my old Astra I let engine warm up for 10 minutes before moving her as she had been sitting for a cople of weeks and it juts let the oils warm up first.
Again I do the same with my X5and seems ok when having sat for a couple of weeks.

Re: selecting DRIVE
Reverse to Drive is a built in function on the E53 to allow the driver to 'rock' the car out of mud or snow. You have to go between the two in either direction within half a second.
As above, from 'N' you must have the foot brake depressed to select either 'R' or 'D'.

didn't know about that? what exactly is the 'built in function' other than simply being able to select either gear with the foot brake depressed? ie what's special about that to allow 'rocking' your way out?

Re: selecting DRIVE
You don't need the brake pedal depressed to switch quickly between the two (D & R). Hence the rocking action. Brake pedal action is only needed to get 'out' of Neutral or Park. The half second limit allows you to go through N without the normal safety interlocks engaging.

Re: selecting DRIVE
interesting, thanks, must try that!
i had high fun in the easter break in peak district which was covered in snow. challenged my mate on an RS4 and had a good laff at audi )
wish i knew this too ... although the X didn't need any special attention to crawl up and down a few inches of snow where hte RS for was going mostly sideways! )

Re: selecting DRIVE
Turns out part of the gear linkage cable is worn. BMW only sell the complete unit, and the cost is £359.
Part no 25161423536. Anyone recommend another supplier who might be cheaper? GSF cannot help. :'(

Re: selecting DRIVE
thanks for the info. tbh buying 2nd hand might be not better off than i currently am. have managed to source the complete assembly for a bit less at Cotswold BMW. think im going to have to bite the bullet eventually. it it possible to select drive when the gear gaitor is pulled back you can see the slight movement in the rod where it slids up and down. but also side to side more than it should do thus making it more difficult to select DRIVE
On the photo i have taken it shows where there is movement (red arrow.) i have tried to take a video to illustrate what the problem is under the gear gaitor. (or so i believe!) :'(
