has anyone tried them on X5's
i used to have them on a toureg and really liked them, i could still get grip towing a horsebox across a wet field, and the tread pattern looks cool

Haven't used them but contemplated same as a sensible all year around solution before I sourced dedicated winters. Only reservations would be performance when pushing on hard on twisty tarmac and maybe mpg.

If you search boards you will see my past deliberations & ramblings re this as well as some content from at least one member who has them fitted.

Hi,
I have a set of these on 18" wheels.

I was looking for a set of winter tyres, but these were being sold locally, almost new and were too good a deal to ignore.

I have had them on for 4 months without any issues.

Living at the bottom of a steep lane, I needed tyres that would enable me to get out in bad weather. In the one bit of serious snow that we had in Cornwall this year they performed well.

At the moment I am keeping them on as there is the odd occasion that I have to go on to grass.

There is an increase with road noise compared to the other tyres, but after a while you don't notice it.

I put grabber 19" UHP's on last November after a friend with a Disco recommended them.
They have impressed me, reasonably quiet at Motorway speeds (well I don't think they are any noisier than the tyres that were on it) and they have coped with the mud, snow and everything else this winter brought. I wouldn't say I "Off Road" but we have horses and one of my hobbies is shooting so I do use green lanes and farm tracks that have been pretty snotty this last season, plus we have had the horses out a couple of times this year and muddy gateways and slippery fields haven't been an issue while pulling a horse box.

On top of that the price from Blackcircles was cheaper than most brands, I would buy them again.

They seem a sensible all choice for those also wanting non tarmac use in conditions such as described.

1. What tyres were fitted before ?

2. Any change to MPG since fitting ?

3. Any increased roll, sliding, unpredictability etc &  if/when driven near limit point on tarmac ?

Haven't used Generals. Had a pair of Nexen Roadian HP fitted today. The tracking was out and scrubbed the outside edges, particularly the offside. The adjusting rod on the offside was seized solid and it took much heat and a big pair of stillsons to move it.

All now lined up and I can't believe how much lighter the steering is now that the front wheels are pointing where they should! Went for Nexens after reading great reviews. £103 each delivered from Camskill for 275.40.20s.

We'll see how they fare.

In answer to the questions AW8

1. When I brought the car it was running on Cooper Zeon's they were worn and on muddy tracks there was a lot of slip and wheel spin. The UHP's are noise rated at 79 Db which seems to be not far away from any other tyre's for the X5, certainly in use on the Motorway with cruise set at 2800 they seem no noisier than the Cooper Zeons. Certainly haven't had to turn up the radio.

2. I did a number of runs up to the Whetherby/Harrowgate area during the shooting season the X5 is LPG converted and a full tank would get me from Sussex to Whetherby 254 miles with a little to spare, both before and after the tyre change. So I would guess very little difference between the two.

3. Can't really say about "on the limit handling" (it scares the horses) what I can say is I am not by any means a slow driver (without the Horsebox) and wet or dry the X5 goes where it's pointed and stops without drama when you stand on the brakes.

Overall I am pleased with the UHP's I guess wear rates may be higher. I will check and report if anyone is interested so far just over 4k covered and hardly any signs of wear at all but if we get a summer and high temperatures that could change.

The issue in past with more off road dedicated rubber has been lack of sizes to cover staggered set up on the 19's. Often fronts or rears available but seldom both - hence the lack of choice in the UK.

I'd be interested to see specific available tyres for AT for front & rear 19's.

For JPR in Cornwall.......I am from that area, did you source tour tyres locally or off the 'net?  I am planning a road trip to The Orkneys next month and considering replacing tyres before I go.

Hi, I cannot comment on the x5 as only had it a week  ) but one of the first things I looked at for the 5 was some proper A/T tyres. We had an xtrail for the past 8 years and have to say spent the first 3/4 years disappointed in the bad weather performance, that was un till I got some grabber at2's fitted. It totally transformed the car and it went anywhere I pointed it after that. I haven't read a bad review of the new at's and so that was what I was hoping to fit to the 5 but seems they don't do the 19" rears  >:( :bangin: so am now on the hunt for a set of 18" wheels as they do that size and just have em on for the winter. I will need a new set of tyres before our trip to Italy in August and the UHP's do seem to be a contender.
