Re: I phone 5
Mine is paired but doesn't display number or contact when an incoming call occurs??? Phonebook and everything else works fine. I think it's because my car is 53 plate pre facelift and therefore will have a gen2/3 Bluetooth unit.

Bluetooth protocols and radio frequencies have not changed. Basic pairing functions should always work. Once paired different functions may or may not be supported but basic hands free should always work.
BMW have about 9 generations of the Bluetooth module in the X5!!! But mostly they are improved antenna more reliable connection etc.
Something about the iphone can cause the pairing to fail if you have too many text messages saved. It sees the car but never offers the code input box.
I had to delete all saved text messages and after that restarted the pairing. Worked right away after that.
In my 2006 I get my address book , onscreen feedback of phone numbers incoming and outgoing on both the nav screen and the dash board.
Works great. .
I've got a 4s but I paired a friends 5 just fine.

Re: I phone 5
Bluetooth protocols have changed. Early X5's (and other BMWs) only supported version 1.1 properly for the address and contact data. We're now in BT V4 and although in theory it should all play nice, it has proved not be quite that easy in reality when pairing new phones to older cars. Some are limited to basic call functions or a subset of the full range only. We had so much difficulty with the E46 BT that I opted for the built in phone where you put the SIM card in a card holder in the armrest.
Even in 2004 when mine was made there were a very limited range of phones that worked fully and the current cars get new software available to users from BMW that we can upload to our cars to improve the interoperability. BMW were very slow at getting the hang of Bluetooth implementations in their cars and limited themselves to certain parts of the standard rather than adopting a wider view......and that also resulted in some of the different versions of the TCU hardware being brought out often only a few months after the previous version. BMW introduced the 'Combox' in 2010 which was supposed to be future proof as it only need new firmware to introduce new functions. Again that has proved to not be the case and every few months new options appear which cannot be retrofitted to the Combox system via a download. You need a new Combox and other hardware. The first version doesn't support 3G, but the current one does. No doubt a 4G version will appear fairly soon.
In 2010 the iDrive system provided all sorts of functions providing you had a Blackberry. If you didn't have one then hard luck, those functions were either not available or limited.

Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
Re: I phone 5
Seems orange have a service called same number. So in theory it would be possible to get some compact phone and the appropriate snap in adaptor and have a car phone with the antenna in the spoiler for best reception and still have the same number for the iPhone.
Might look into this as I live in a poor signal area and just getting in the car I lose a bar of signal .
I understand early bmw bt modules had weak antenna/radio which made pairing hard. As for more advanced features I get phone book and caller I'd on the computer and dashboard. That's good enough. Not like I have an I drive car anyway .
I suspect the original poster will need to check what version of the bmw module is fitted. If its the 1st generation module it may not connect with many phones. I assume the modules have the BMWs part number printed on them.

Re: I phone 5
My understanding is there is an issue with Apples new IOS6 operating system. Now im not sure whether or not this has any affect on the BMW system but there is alot on the web going around that once people have updated to IOS6 they lose certain bluetooth functionality. This is across branded units with BT i.e. Kenwood, Sony, Pioneer and so on. Some users report that they can pair up, but they cant access their phone book or number or anything whilst other users are saying they cant pair at all.
Not sure what the situation will be going forward and as I said this may not even relate to the X5.

i know how to do it, i have a htc that works fine, i'm looking to upgrade but won't get an iphone 5 unless it works.

hey robzilla....I've got a march 2004 car. I also have the htc one s phone and have managed to pair it. My problem is 1, it does not import my phone book and 2, it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting at random times.
I've come to the conclusion that the early Bluetooth modules were problematic. But your car is older than mine but you say you had it working fine. What model htc did you have? Or do u have any tips I could try.
Thanks
