The Kumho's are on!

Post by Shez1878 » Fri Apr 12, 2013 7:59 pm

So have had 4 brand new Kumho's fitted at a cost of £640. I know majority here swear by Premium tyres only so thought I would give them a bash and see whether Michelins, Dunlop etc are worth £600 more.

As you would expect, so far so good. Quieter and smoother than the Dunlop RFTs. Lots of rain in Midlands recently and they have performed great in the wet.

Will keep you posted.

Well done Shez, do keep us informed.

Out of interest, have you decided what you're doing with the spare tyre/puncture situation?

Lol. I may need it based on people's views on non-premium tyres!

Interestingly I spoke with 4 different tyre garages re: premium vs non-premium on cars worth so much money.

Not a single one spoke in favour of premium tyres. Said there was hardly any difference and they changed Pirelli's and Michelin's just as much as non-premium tyres over same distance.

Proof is in the pudding as they say.

As for what happens when I get a flat....RAC/AA was the advice given!

The truth is premium tyres are better but are they worth twice the price?

That's the real question that needs answering...

May I recommend using some tyre magic. Cost about forty pounds and will save hassle and time if you only get a small puncture.

I have just purchased 4 new tyres also due to outer wear on fronts and middle wear on rears, frustratingly the tread depth across the remaining tyre(s) is well within 4-5mm so alignment also required.
Having spent quite literally weeks on "research" on the net I also considered the Kumos, Hankooks and even the Acceleras as well as the obvious "big" names, during my "research" i read many owners reviews (favourable more so than negative) on many forums and across many countries....
A colleague in work has the Acceleras on a 58 plate Merc ML and swears by them.... My brother in law has the Kumhos and has only good  things to say about them and he has an e53 X5.
For me there is too much brand snobbery,,,  consider for a moment that BMW are now fitting Hankook as standard on new 3 series etc,,  tells a story on how far some of the "budget" brands/manufacturers have come!
Anyway, I have also went non run flat and managed to get my hands on a great deal,,
20" Continental 4x4 Sport contact on a staggered set up for £650 delivered,  yes they are a "big" brand name but for me the deciding factor was price not simply the brand.
This was not a single purchase as I bought the rears from one supplier and the rears from another, both eBay online traders......
Just need to get them fitted and 4wheel alignment,,,,  talking of which my local KwikFit have quoted £38 for alignment on a Hunter system and they advised they have the calibrated weights required to set the geometry back to BMW exact standards,,  this price is for fronts and a reading on the rears, if rears need adjusting the is a slight on cost to have them done,,,  worth a punt at that price as they depot manager certainly seemed to know what he was talking about.......
