Not another winter tyre post - a summer tyre one!

Post by Smeeagain » Thu Apr 11, 2013 1:53 pm

Hi

I've read a few posts such at the General Grabber one. I currently have Vredestien Wintrac extreme fitted to 19 inch wheels on my 2004 3.0D Sport E53.

I am looking for summer tyre. by this I mean - good in wet and dry, mainly motorway miles however I do spend about 6 weeks in the Scottish Highlands in off road type conditions so tracks rather than roads, mud, gravel, etc - Whilst its only a few weeks of the summer I nevertheless want a tyre that is up for the job.

The winters cost me circa £500 and Id spend similar if need be.

Your dead right there, theres nothing quite like a tyre related question to provoke enthusiastic debate on here.
Brace yourselves men, this could get messy!

well I threw that in to see what would happen. Previous tyres were circa £200 as I recall. So disregard my price and just give me the recommendations !!!

They are standard 19inch non run flat (can remeber the precise letters/numbers on the sidewall sorry)

Cheers

yes I could just keep them on but the winters are on 17 inch wheels which I don't really like the look of so dont want to drive around in the all year and as I do do some serious snow winter driving then I don't want to wear them out in the summer. So still looking for summer tyres 19 inch recommendations please

Just had a pair of Nexen Roadian HP  on the front275.40.20. They replaced Contis. I bought these after reading really good reviews. Korean tyres (from the South I hope)

The tracking was out and now it's all adjuted, the car feels o much better, steers straight and feels lighter. Thy were £103 delivered from Camskill plus 10 each for fitting. Ime will tell how they fare.

I'm fairly limited in my knowledge of tyres (but rapidly trying to learn). As I'm in the market for a full set of four, I plan to have (aside of different tyre widths front and rear) the same tyre brand/model on all four corners. Just a personal thing but I don't really want Michelin rear and Goodyear front (just as an example)

The current tyres are:
Front 255/55 R19
Rear 285/45 R 19

I have noticed that I could get 255's and 285's in a 50 profile. Should I match what is currently on tyre OR is there a specific reason for them being different. Reason for asking is I'm struggling to get a set of four (of the same brand/model) with 2 x 255/55 and 2 x 285/45 but if I get both 255 and 285 at 50 profile then they appear to readily available.

Thoughts?

Correct tyre sizes for the 19" e53 Sport are 255/50/19 front with a load rating of 103 and 285/45/19 rear with a load rating of 107. They should also be at least 'V' rated for speed. These are the tyres sizes spec'd by BMW.

If you start to mess with sizes then several issues arise. Possible transmission issues and possible Insurance issues, should you have a claim and your car is found to have the incorrect tyres. It will be Nul & Void, simple.

Ok, so add a further complexity to the post. Budget tyres or premium tyres? Do you believe it really makes a difference?

Vreds, do a summer tyre, if you are happy with their winter tyres, look at the reviews on the summers. I have the Vreds extreme wintracs on mine as well and I am very pleased with them. I'm thinking of leaving them on all year round. I only do around 5/7 K a year. I've done two winters on them and they still look like new, they ride better than the Michelin Demaris's I used in summer.
I used Tyremen website . Vreds also do all season tyres too, see link
