Judder - Brake Discs issue
Judder - Brake Discs issue
Hi X'ers,
I have started having a judder on the wheel when braking. I though it was bushes/ arms but it turns out it's the brake discs. I don't use her often anymore, and save for the long runs. But too far inbetween the Discs have become rusted, and not used under breaking which, I have been told, is the way it cleans itself.
Anyways, I have been looking and found some Brembo's on Ebay, which I think at roughly £115 for the front pair and £107 for the rears, seems a good price?? EBC's and Tarox are quite expensive. Also, any thoughts on drilled, grooved, dimpled or just plain?
Thanks all.

When the discs are stood for any length of time they will start to rust, but usually after a few applications they will clean them selves back up when the pads rebel back in.
If you fit new discs, these will also rust up too, if stood for any length of time.
I would take her for a run and apply the brakes a good few times, maybe look through the wheels on your return to see what condition the surface of the discs are in before going to the expense of replacing the discs.
My wife had a shogun that was used daily as a run around, under or all use you never noticed the disc judder but on the motorway it was horrendous .

Re: Judder - Brake Discs issue
When we had the Horse Lorry this was a common problem as it was stood through the winter and used only in the summer. Every year getting it plated was a big cost due to little use, and every year we had brake judder it was a sticking caliper not the rusted disc's as has been said they clean up after a few hard stops.
I had the calipers rebuilt twice, still didn't cure it. In the end fitted new calipers and the problem was fixed.
I would definitely look at the calipers first.

Re: Judder - Brake Discs issue
i had judder when braking at around 70mph, was fixed by changing bushes (plus my tyres were bad so changed tyres too)
my disks don't rust (possibly coated) but even if they do, i've seen this in many cars its a non issue the rust is only on the surface and clears out the moment you apply brakes.
issue with disks is actually not rust but warping. if the disks are causing a judder its relatively easy to diagnose - apply brakes softly at low speed and you should be able to feel it on the brake pedal. if not its unlikely to be an issue with the disks..

Re: Judder - Brake Discs issue
Thanks all. Have put her up on a ramp. Pads are fine, discs not warped, but shows signs of rust, had the bushes as arms looked at as well. I think it's just the rust. Took her for a 100 mile run the couple days ago, judder still present. Will look at some fronts to start with, as that's where it's coming from. Didn't know Pagid was OE. Thanks again.

Re: Judder - Brake Discs issue
This is quite a common problem on these cars and I replaced my discs and pads trying to solve it to no avail. The car failed it's MOT on the ball joint straight arms and once replaced the judder was completely gone. Worth a look in this case as well maybe.

Re: Judder - Brake Discs issue
If one of the brakes is dragging slightly it will cause judder. The disc overheats and warps when it gets too hot. After driving for a while, without too much heavy braking, stop & compare the temperature of the wheels with your hand. Both sides should feel the same.
Re: Judder - Brake Discs issue
The kind of judder you describe is pretty common and regularly mis-diagnosed as brake disc problems. The more common cause is worn thrust arm bushes, wishbone bushes or ball joints, especially if you can feel it more through the steering wheel than the brake pedal.
If you do a search you'll find that a few of us have been down this wobbly road :-[
Not saying it isn't the discs but it wasn't in my case (and a few other).
