Post by phiggystardust » Mon Nov 08, 2010 9:59 pm

hi guys
thinking of doing this upgrade to halo xenon lights on my 2002, but so many questions :? can facelift lights be fitted to prefacelifts, can face lift bi xenons be retro fitted to pre facelift cars (can get hold of a set of these easy) but what else is needed???, upgrade kits you see on the bay, do they come with leveling motors and are they any good??? and on and on,just a few to start off with :) :)

The facelift lights will not fit into the pre-facelift.

The Xenons are a complicated beast and not to be attempted unless you know your car electrics VERY well. They produce a high voltage to get the gas in the bulb to light up.

BUT the kits are available to get Xenons. They work but remember the legal issues - OEM get self-leveler and washers. Your's will have an adjustable, so not legal. Not one that catches anyone out though - even one's I fitted recently went to the local MOT centre where they adjusted them correctly but never asked about legal issues.

There are many new after-market lights out there that look more like the face-lift one's. Think the pre face-lift was reflective where as the newer one's are a projection type. Hence the goldfish look lens...
Scn Protect,Alarm Chirp,Ashtray del,Sub install,IV2,Screens,PS2 Media,Chrome rings,Schnitzer pedals,Reverse cam,Silver Grills,F/mirrors,Comp Spkrs,Heated S/W,20"168s,Splash scn,Arches,Remap,LED Tails,ACS Spoiler,'is' Bumper Trim,Rear heated seats,Rear blinds

Facelift units cannot be fitted to prefacelift car unless you change the whole front end as they have a different physical shape.

Not sure on the xenon units only so cant comment if they would straight fit into prefacelift units but suspect not.

Afaik the xenon units dont come with self level motors.

I have factory xenon dip beams & will be so bold as to say that whilst good they arent the be all and end all some would let you believe.

The law on these, (if of concern to you), is open to debate but the dft has made its position quite clear in that self levelling & washers would be required. My personal view is that just as illegal plates and tints have had their fair share of attention I suspect bulbs & lighting are up for more legal attention in the future. There is a link to the official dft line on another thread so do a forum search.

Some folk wanting a more modern look have fitted lamps made by depo - if you look in the classified buy/sell section you will see a grey car that had them fitted. I am not 100% sure but seem to recall you may have to import these.

Personally if it were my car I would simply buy the best halogen bulbs I could get hands on, fit those to dip beams get lamps realigned.

If wanting a more modern look the early lights, ( I think there was a switch point sometime in 2002 but uncertain - check xoutpost), on the first prefacelifts can be baked, open & the amber removed. If feeling very creative the amber reflector dremelled out and painted with silver reflective paint, (this would be my preference if freshening up corners).

There are also angel eye kits you can buy............. If upgrading to more powerful, ( technically illegal), halogen bulbs it is important to consider that extra heat might not be too friendly with some angel eye kits. For decent headlamp bulbs google to se what others fitr in your bulb size. Not sure the bulb type but if you check on autobulbs direct it should tell you. Osram Nightbreakers seem to get good reviews as do Philips though technically bright bulbs like the ebay sourceable Diamond vision which have more of a xenon look also are technically illegal in the UK at 5000k. Hoen in USA also export their "xenonmatch" bulbs at a cost but again these are technically illegal in the uk afaik & not E stamped,(again only an issue if this bothers you).

EDITED TO CORRECT MY PRIOR WRONG INFO - ME BAD  Also consider you may wish to change the indicator bulbs to chrome look - due to fitting on original prefacelifts the bladed chrome choice requires overseas consideration of sourcing from USA .

I would say you should ask self what budget you have & what you aim to achive - Is it better visbility or better cosmetics ?

Perhaps be careful what you decide upon not only in reliability terms, but also as molested lamps are a put off for some - come resale.

Whilst confident in assesing the integrity of a used car I am niether a mechanic or a mod guru. Hopefully others will comment with more specific info &/or indeed correct me if I am wrong.

Edit- I posted at about the same time as Sanj, ( who knows far more than me re mods), so apologies for any duplication or conflict in info.

sorry to jump on this post - I have had my 2002 lights (halogens) baked, opened up, angel eyes fitted and the orange bits dremmeled out. Really love the way its changed the front of the car - worth every penny! Only problem is I left the orange indicator bulbs in and at certain angles they really ruin the new look - does anyone know where i can get the 'silver' bayonet type indicator bulb??? Am sure someone had sourced from the states on the old forum - any help/ contact details appreciated.
Cheers
Paul

I think as ebay item 270635283631

Or do an ebay international search.

Or try these - memory tells me they are 581 120 degree offset pin spec - check first maybe removing rears which should be the same.

AW8 thanks for that - my mistake though, its not bayonet fitting - not sure what the exact descriptive term is but its a plastic 'push in' type with two wires - like a piece of flat plastic at the back of the bulb which pushes into the fitament. I know I had real difficulty even sourcing the actual orange bulbs when i needed one.

Right then after a little research via google etc i believe this one will work for you :D (do your own further research to make sure mind)
http://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-3357A-34 ... B000AME5GI

Also i am led to believe from other forums etc that the p27/7w or in us terms 3157 will fit the 3757a (your oem one)holder with a little modification to the plastic base
here is further info for the oem bulbs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotive_lamp_types

..............it's all coming back to me now.

There was an ebay seller in USA selling sylvania silvastars but on further research I learned tey have a slight blue ball bearing look.

I remember I did more research on xoutpost & stealth bulbs seemed well regarded.

http://www.stealthauto.com/bmw-x5-serie ... bulbs.aspx

Same as comments from x555 - best to check by emailing seller(s) first.

Sorry for earlier confusion - Just to clarify prefacelifts have bladed front indicator bulbs & NOT bayonett.
