Found these links...

are these of any help and/or relevant?

That jubilee clip on the left looks a monkey, is it attached in anway or a special type as it hold 2 pieces of metal together?

More to the point could it drop off and potentially never be rescued? :)) :-[

Me thinks some spare screws would be needed just in case too :-[

Thank you for the links, I'd read them before, apparently the e46 won't throw any error codes if you remove the EGR, but an e60 will.
But I'm wondering about an e53, particularly the updated 2004-2006? Surely someone has done it? I'm going to do it, and I'll post how it goes.
But if anyone's tried, especially if it threw an error code, or if you know how to code it out, please share!

I just took mine off and cleaned it using carb cleaner.  Easy enough job but messy.

Good luck with the bypass, I will be watching with interest.

As the EGR valve is vacuum operated it is a simple job to deactivate it by removing the vacuum pipe and plugging off the hose. I removed mine last year and cleaned it out with carb cleaner and refitted it. I wouldn't bother replacing it with a new one. On a diesel engined car I would be suprised if you noticed any difference in performance by fitting a bypass kit.
I agree its not nice seeing what crap is being introduced into the manifold via the EGR valve. I was tempted to disable mine, but didn't, I will clean it every couple of years if I keep the car.

I bypassed mine, '02 MY. Had hesitation issues so thought it could be the EGR. Took it off and cleaned it first, no joy! So fitted the bypass. It turned out to be the inline fuel pump under the floor. I couldn't be bothered changing the EGR back so have just run with it. No probs after 7-8k. No real performance increases, maybe a better throttle response, but hard to tell seeing the fuel pump was failing.

Ok, so I've fitted a bypass I found on eBay in the uk.
So far all good , no warning messages have come up. Not much difference, except less hesitation when moving away from a stand still.

Thanks for the info, i took mine of today due to a lumpy idle and fitted a delete kit, just over an hour start to finish with the info on this thread.

Very helpful

Hi Gents,

I swapped out my EGR unit with a straight thru unit from Flea-Bay.... cost about £25 from Poland.

I had a bit of fiddling to do to get the item to fit, but it only took 15 mins to fit in the end..

THE MOST IMPORTANT part of the job is to put an old flannel or cloth stretched under the Allen bolts to catch them when they drop off the Allen head driver bit - as it's a sodding pain to have to drop the Engine Under Tray off for one small bolt !!

The device I had, has a blanker built into the side of the unit & a simple metal stub to push the Vacuum tube onto it.

No Errors at all, and a slightly better revv pick-up.

On it's own, you will probably not notice any performance difference...
but combined with an injector flush, a K&N air filter & an oil change.... you will notice a small but notable  difference, and economy will improve marginally also.

Worth doing ????
YES.

HI there.

I am replacing the EGR valve on my 2006 3.0d X5.

Its a tricky little bugger to remove-considering the bottom two screws are so hard to get at.

What I'm wondering is this:

The little tube connected to the side will not budge. I guess after 5 years and a lot of engine heat, its well and truly stuck on.

Has anyone any tips for removing it or am I best to snip it at the end of its receiver and place the newly cut tube end on the new EGR?

Is there an easier way to get at those bottom bolts? Or am I along the right track by going for the top 2 bolts first, then the one on the bottom left, which then allows you to rotate the entire valve upwards whilst giving you slightly more access to the final 4th bolt.

Any help greatly appreciated as always.

Whats the cost of your new EGR valve?

Sorry to resurrect this but why do all the delete kits only specify E53 up to 2003 and not the facelfit engine?

Have the got it wrong....even this "British made" one says 2003?
