Computer Problems - help please.

Post by Pete » Sun Nov 07, 2010 11:31 am

My computer seemed to partially reset itself earlier this week and I have noticed the following:

Desktop background changed.
Font changed on Internet Explorer
Homepage changed to MSN America
Keyboard keys such as @ have changed location.

I just wondered what has gone on and the only thing I am still struggling to do is revert the keys into their correct positions :x - please can someone help me with this?

I have run a number or virus scans etc. and it hasn't brought anything up

Thanks in advance!

Hi

I know you say that you have done check etc but I would first of all do a disk clean up. If you running XP go to start/ all programs/ accessories/ system tools and then disk clean up and run it. I would also make sure you have checked from Trojans and would suggest a small program called Mbam by going here http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-A ... 04572.html

Run that program and check for Trojans and if you have any it will identify them and should get rid of them. When you have done that go to Control Panel and under the languages (top tab) select details and make sure all of the setting are for English UK keyboard. When you have done that open a web page go to tools / options and then change your home page to the one you desire.

Cant tell you what went wrong but this should get your keyboard and home page back to normal :-)

Pete - not easy to tell the cause remotely but my advice is to get the computer to restore to an earlier date before the change took place. Look for System Restore in the control panel or you can probably just type restore in the search box that appears when you press the start button.

Alternatively get an expert friend to help either at the PC or via a remote desktop connection.

Certainly sounds, like Penny says, that the keyboard has been changed and the PC may now think its in the US if the MSN homepage has changed to MSN America.

Or the machine has reverted to the default profile. Check to see if there is a duplicate profile with your login name in the "my documents and settings".

There are various reasons why the profile can get lost which I won't bore you with, but a full reset as you described is mostly due to a profile "wipe".

It's so frustrating when you don't have it to look at as the others are right there may be many reasons. Unfortunately with my kids messing with mine a restore was not possible as there was no restore point but defiantly an option worth exploring.

I format mine about once a year but that's due to a byproduct of having a family PC :-(

I have 3 Macs here as well, they never need any work doing despite everyone using them.

Just remind your husband what you want for Christmas. Mention the bird droppings incident :)

Thanks for your help everyone. I've downloaded that programme via the link and it has found a couple of things on my computer that the others didn't pick up, this seems to have got the toolbar back how it used to be.

I've manually changed the homepage again and downloaded something via microsoft that repaired the fault with the keyboard settings. Hopefully all is sorted now - just a bit apprehensive to enter online banking details etc.

Dont go there  But best not say anything as he might remind me of when I drove his BMW into a low level bollard :withstupid: when I was 21

By the way Pete glad you got it sorted. I use Adaware, CW Shredder, Spy bot and Mbam and that gets rid of the nasties if they find their way in that is !!!!
