Anything Land Rover = unreliable overpriced turd IMHO. I hate them. Bloody awful and shocking quality. + massive overkill. Its like having a washing machine with 148 wash programes when all you really need is 6. Even the most basic R/Rover starts at £71 K. The Evoke looks like a squashed freelander and the RR sport is for people who cannot afford a real RR. Strong opinions I know. Do they use R/Rovers anywhere in the world that matters ? Absolutely not. They don't use them in the desert, africa or the arctic. In fact anywhere where if your car breaks down you die, you wont find a land rover product. Don't fall for the massive marketing/advertising campaign. Best 4x4xfar ? what utter bollocks. There is a reason the UN buy 12,000 Land Cruisers every year. + look at any country where there is a revolution/war.....all the insurgents use Toyotas/ Land Cruisers. If its good enough for them, its bloody well good enough for me.
Land Rover products = throw your money down toilet and make sure you have extended warranty/rac/AA and another car to drive when yours is in the garage.
I have gone X5 myself because of price, but If I needed a money no object 4X4 , there is No question in my mind, it would be a Land Cruiser V8 ...............have tested one and if it wasn't for the fact I got an X5 £10 k cheaper its what I would have bought.

Good luck, but I think you will hate it.

Regards

Nat.

:))

i know what u mean nat, especially having owned a land cruiser before! magnificent beasts offroad! what else do u expect i guess with even a redundant set of belts in the engine and even a battery!

coincidentally, was in peak district over Easter, with a couple of mates and fams,  me with X5, another with an RRS, another with an RS4.  was covered with a few inches with nice hill climbs. challenged the RS4 on a steep climb up and down covered with snow. RS4 slipped like crazy and went mostly sideways. X5 managed effortlessly, hill descent mode was impressive. RRS didn't try the climb (i'm sure it could have managed though..).

RRS gave a 'brake system failure' issue and wouldn't budge! had to call up land rover support. they came around in half hr (pretty impressive support) said handbrakes seemed to have stuck on, removed teh centre console and did some emergency release, prob wasn't resolved had to drive back with handbrakes disabled.

but then u don't find X5s either in the sahara or in afganistan or anywhere beyond paved roads!  :P

Good points, to a degree, Nat.

All manufacturers gild the lily when it comes to extolling their products' virtues so I don't think everyone buying a RR has necessarily fallen for the hype.

Arguments about reliability are moot to some extent. You may have considered a Toyota but I'll happily admit there is no way I would - do absolutely nothing for me, despite their engineering brilliance, and I suspect the same would be of many people who are considering a high end 4x4.

I know plenty of people who could afford a  FFRR but love the look of the Sport. Call it fashion, following the herd or whatever, it happens.

Yes, most people may never use the capabilities of their cars but we could all name any household product or appliance which does the same. A microwave may have a double grill, convection heating etc but I pretty much want it to heat up my food! It's marketing, so what?

Also, the point of reliability (not Tundra or desert reliability) isn't that straightforward. I'm sure we can all name as many people who are happy with the reliability of the LR products as those that aren't. I'll also add that my E70 was the most unreliable and frustratingly unpredictable car I've ever owned so it's not like we are immune to issues. My 335d also spent more time in the garage than it really should have. Doesn't stop me buying another BMW.

Fact is, for many people, LR are immensely desirable and have a cachet to match. However that image or following has been built is immaterial. It's not all smoke and mirrors, though.

Very many people won't be able to take emotion, fashion, ego, feelgood factor, status when buying their car - I'll admit that there are varying degrees of those factors (and more)when I'm choosing a car. But it's far too easy to generalise and pass judgement on others' choices if we take all those factors out of the equation. People judge the X6 all the time and have since if came out - I'll give them exactly the same argument.

:)

HI,

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

" I'll also add that my E70 was the most unreliable and frustratingly unpredictable car I've ever owned so it's not like we are immune to issues."

Don't tell me that, Ive ordered one and am waiting for delivery
.
I don't need a friday afternoon car.

If the E70 I have ordered, so much as belches, its getting p/ex'd immediately against a Land Cruiser V8.

I agree all the points made about fashion etc etc .....................and I wont hold it against you if you buy a Land Rover product, I will just laugh at you as I drive past you ( when you break down ).
I had this argument with the Head of Marketing @ Land Rover when I went on a factory visit. He was most offended/put out when I told him his products were crap. He told me I had no idea what I was talking about. I said if BMW hadn't bought you and shown you how to build  a car you would still be producing defenders. Anyway, I was invited to the Land Rover test area, where we got into a brand new discovery that was going to shut me up, except that it broke down. Yup, handbrake stuck on. Had to abandon it and go get another one which perfectly rammed home my point.  Exit smuggly.................

Anyway, maybe its an age thing. I don't want to be going to the garage every week thats for sure.
Ive read the reader reviews on what car and I'd say 25% or maybe slightly more people absolutely slate their Land Rovers and say never again.

I will never buy one, because I think they are overpriced and unreliable..................

Lastly, and this isn't a dig at and RR owners on here, just a bit of amusement

Whats the difference between a hedgehog and a Range Rover ?

On a hedgehog the pricks are on the outside.

Regards,
Nat.

Be prepared for lots of niggly problems with the X5, probably worst car I've ever owned

I'd still rather have that than an ugly (in and out) Toyota though. That even makes the X6 look attractive!

Too many to list!!

Mainly involving electrical issues (loads of different wanings) and sunroof.

It was probably made so much worse by the fact the dealer was fucking useless!

If I sent you a link of my photobucket account you will see loads of BMW courtesy cars, and they were only the half decent ones!!!

That is exactly what my dad used to call my old 535 and X5, both black with blacked out windows

Not sure bright blue is a hearse but if it is at least the 'late' passenger won't actually be any later ! :)

Thanks 535 - it sounds like when I bought my e39 530i, my neighbours never knew which was my car as I had so many courtesy cars!

Yes mine thought I was a car dealer!

Now they just think I'm a drug dealer with the cars that park on their sometimes when my friends come over to stay

Last week it was a £120k 997 gt3 RS owned by a 30 year old

Few weeks before that another 30 year old and his Bentley arnage T which was quite amusing when 4 lads turned up to get their Chinese takeaway.

There is something else arriving next week which will be staying on my drive for a few weeks. I think it is just being off loaded at the port this week.
