I'm not too sure here but the filter on the right doesn't look like the new filter you would hope to receive after your car has been serviced. Next time i am in Harrogate i may pop n and see said car sales man and advise him of his wrong doings!!!!!

Is this a new car to you, which the salesman has waffled about its service or have you paid to have your car serviced and this is the result?  Either way, I wouldn't be waiting until I'm in the area, I'd be on the blower Monday to give him both barrels!  :rant: :chair: :upset:

Don, This is a new car to me, and i will be phoning him on Monday first thing and letting him have the advice down the phone but i think i may also pay him a visit next time i am home. Not amused is a tad understated. The car is going into my friends garage on monday for a "full" service. I have used these guys for years now and trust them fully. I have no come back now really though as i have done +/-1400 miles in it since i bought it so he will just try and fob me off with "that is how a filter will look after 1400 miles"

Raj, I noticed the air intake pipe into the airbox wasn't fitted correctly (the locking tabs were about 2mm away from being engaged so i took the airbox out to sort it and that is when i made the shocking discovery!!!
Pity help him when i get on the phone on Monday morning. Hope he has ear plugs in or the sense to move the phone away from his ear.

Looks like the idiots thought about doing it but gave up. Good job in a way as otherwise you wouldn't have checked.

If I may add My tuppence .

The salesman did not conduct the service .
Check the recommended replacement intervals as I think you will find it is every 60 thousand miles , although any mechanic should check condition and certainly replace anything in such a disgusting state .
Looks like the car has been tailgating diesels , or driven near a coal mine / power station / steel mill .

Hard to comment fairly without knowing what it's out of, mileage the cars done and what type of service its just had ?

X5 d air filter is only done every 3rd service so 54Kish/6yrs. Our Exeo is every 40K/4yrs and my Exige every 27K/3yrs.

That air filter looks to me like its done maybe 40-50K miles.

Check the service book, they tick the boxes if an item/ filter has been changed when stamping the book.
As said only changed every 3rd service.
If not ticked you can't very well blast them. I still think you are right about car salesmen though!!!
I usually dump the oil and filters myself when I get a car, even did my diesel air filter and their a pain, it had FBMWSH  as well.

Old boy at the Garage next to me at work says realistically the air filter could do with being changed every 6000 miles as its doesnt take much to get clogged up quite quickly........our beasties suck in quite a lot of air.

Has made me think about looking at mine but its going in for a service soon but i think i may check everything afterwards.

That looks positively clean compared to the one I changed out of mine in August.

I just don't get why a seemingly simple and cheap part to change (on a petrol X ) does not get bothered with. I appreciate the diesel ones are tricky but none the less.

Air condition filter.

A little mark with a UV pen to see if they undid the required bolts is a way of checking, assuming you have a UV light or property marking system.  The mark is pretty much invisible and they'd have to be really good to get perfect alignment.  Or you just tell them you want to see all the old parts......and you could mark those too.

Not that I'm mistrusting or anything!
