Who the fuck are federal tyres!?!? Aren't they the ones that used to be fitted to the ford explorer that kept blowing up and killing people!? Chompers
IIRC I think that was Firestone tyres. That being said, who are Federal tyres?

At the end of the day it's up to the OP what he puts on his car. Your car, your choice, your destiny

Hi Chaps,

Just been told I can't fit non-RFT to rims which have RFTs fitted to them.

Is this true?

Thank you!

Rubbish!!

The rims are identical these days.  Early RFT needed special rims but those are long gone.

Some lady at a garage! Initially refused to do it as too dangerous then said it wasn't possible anyway.

So her lack of knowledge and understanding has lost the company a nice little earner.  I would be ringing up to chat to the boss and letting them know that due to a lack of training for the staff they are out of touch and turning business away.  Not many companies can afford to do so in today's climate.

I do agree with what you have said Chompers, but if it was me, I'd give them a call on the off chance that I could extract an even bigger discount by giving them a second chance.  8)

A fair point. I have tried this once with a well known high st electrical retailer and got no where. Hence my stance in the post above.  ;)

I have the Vredestein Wintrac Xtremes on 19" factory style 335s installed right now - they are a great tire - superb in the snow and ice plus they are a UHP tire, which manifests in the ride & handling - overall great tire!

I just ordered summer tires and a set of 20" wheels.  I really wanted to try Vredestion Ultrac Vorti as the reviews are amazing, but the closest size is 285/35/20 and that is just too short (IMO).  So, I went with Vredestein Sessantas in a staggered setup (315/35/20 + 275/40/20).  I have a 97 M3 sedan with Sessantas and I really like them,so I am optimistic about how they will be on the X5.

My X5 came with Style 335 19" wheels and Conti run flats, which I vehemently hated.  I went from them to the Vred Wintracs and noticed an immediate improvement in every aspect - and the Wintracs are snow tires!

So, I pretty much hate run flats.

Currently also looking into a new set of rears. I have had 55.000 kms in total, and I am guessing I drove about 70% of these kms on the summertires ... approx. 40.000 km.
My rears look fine from the outside, but on the inside there is no thread left on them at all.
I am hesitating to replace them when I will switch back on my summer set or drive for another season on them.

If I would replace them, I am looking at following tires (also on a staggered 20" setup 275/40 & 315/35)

Atturo AZ800 (Cheap, mixed reviews, Nice thread pattern, not too sure about their performance in the wet)
Hankook Ventus S1 Evo (Everyone seems very positive about those)
Vredestein Sessenta (Very good reviews, but what about wear ?)
Vredestein Vorti (Very new tire which gets very good results in ADAC tests)
Toyo Proxes (there are quite some Toyo affecionados)
others (Michelin, Pirelli, Dunlop, Falken, Kumho, Marshal, Nankang, Pace Azura, Sonar, Yokohama) ???
The OEM bridgestones ?

My gut feeling goes out to the Hankooks or the new Vredestein Vorti's ... but any personal experiences of any alternative tires would be very appreciated of course ;)
