Other drivers irritate me when....

Post by Benstan » Wed Mar 13, 2013 9:47 pm

>:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Maybe by writing this, my irritation from my drive home will dissipate.  Other than the obvious stuff (cruising in the middle lane, not indicating, throwing rubbish out the window etc), I get disproportionately angry when

- people slam on the brakes when they see a police car and we have to drive at 65 for 2 miles. Dont they realise that it looks way more suspicious than continuing at 75mph?
- people whose brake lights are out. 1 is forgiveable but 2 is imprisonable.
- people whose exhaust is bust. They can't all be heading to kwikfit?
- people who, at a junction, edge forward so you (in the inside lane) can't see. Van drivers are the worst here but X drivers never do this ;)
- people using mobiles...especially at junctions/roundabouts

What about you guys?

I don't get it when people drive up to a roundabout, them stop, then decide there's nothing coming and set off again forcing you to do the same if your behind them, when it only takes a glance right to establish that there's no car coming hence its perfectly safe to drive onto the roundabout without grinding to a halt.
The above is just mildly annoying, but the biggy for me is one you have already nailed and theres no excuse for it in my book, and thats dropping rubbish out of the window. I just don't get how anyone can think its a perfectly acceptable thing to do.
I have no idea why it winds me up so much, it just does.

Because it's antisocial and sums up a lot of what's wrong with society.

Me, I'm a pretty relaxed driver but if there's one thing which will elicit a few choice profanities (in a non road ragey manner), then it's a simple lack of courtesy eg. no acknowledgement/thanks if I've let someone out of a junction etc.

Quite petty but it really, really ticks me off...

I had an argument with a 4x4 driver once..
I was in crawling traffic and he just forced his way into the line right in front of me causing me to take avoiding action.

I beeped which he didn't like and he yelled something out the window.
I got out and asked him what his problem was..

He had the cheek to say "well its courtesy to let someone out when there is a queue"
to which i replied a curteousy is to wait for someone to allow you out, a legality is that you give way to the right (which i was on) and that you do not force your way into a stream of traffic causing the people who have the right of way to take avoiding action

To which he said something rather uncouth.
Luckily my wife restrained me from going any further....
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

What is it with people who only indicate when they are exiting a roundabout or don't even bother at all? Mostly Mercedes drivers I have noticed. And the Northernism of pulling out into left lane of dual carriageway roundabouts even if you are half way through negotiating it? Or driving in right hand lane of d carriageway when left lane is empty but you want to turn right in 3 roundabouts' time? Etc etc
Keep left unless overtaking I think it says in Highway Code. A34 is rife with all these.

Keen not to appear self righteous. & capable of having off days - thus not claiming to be the perfect driver.

However, my top 3 pet hates......

1. 40-45 mph everywhere drivers.
2. Overtake haters, (including convoy procession drivers that seldom leave decent gaps).
3. Tailgaters

Here's one that doesn't annoy me, but I find it unbelievable that people are that dim, and its when you see a car with kids bouncing around inside, not strapped in and sometimes even stood up between the seats, yet parents are sat in the front with a belt on. Absolutely incredible.

It winds me up when I see people on their mobile phones, particularly when you know the car they're in almost certainly has hands free.

Well I'm not claiming to be a perfect driver, but what piss me off the most is when my BMW is on the road I expect inferior cars to get out of my way.
Back when I had the Scoob you don't really need to slow down to much when going round roundabouts, I'm not talking flat out here. Even just 30mph on a big one, and as said above they just stop or go that slow you can't get out your self. This still happens in the X and this can not corner on the same level, but still end up so close because they have set off and continued to go slow.
Just a few things here that get me going
1 lane hogging Evan at daft O'clock in the morning
2 60mph driver drives behind lorrys for miles, then moves into the second lane as I approach still doing 60mph. Making me brake just because they can't be arsed to wait 5 more seconds.
3 people brake there neck to beat you or get in front from 2 lanes to 1 just to go 35 in a 40 zone
4 the same person then continuous to do 35 in a 30??
5 cruise set at 70 your over taken just for them to slow down, still set at 70 you go to over take just for them to speed up. Some times this as gone on for miles, god knows what goes through people's heads when driving these days.
Basically I'm not very good at keeping it cool when driving, so many things get me wound up.

Training, training, training!  We are just too soft towards new drivers and expect them to improve their driving ability once they have passed.  The training and testing needs to be a lot more indepth with more effort spent on awareness of other roads users and anticipation, as well as getting the basics right.  I would also be in favour of retests every five or ten years. I'm not talking about a full test, but maybe a route tht takes in some town driving and then dual carriage way and motorway, as a good examiner will soon spot poor driving habits and advise.

Completely agree. But I bet most of the issues/incidents stated above where carried out by older drivers!!! The older you are the slower your reaction time is and decisions take longer. Judgment also takes longer to compute. The roundabout stopper is a classic of this. Elderly drivers are fast catching up young drivers in the percentage of accidents caused.

I agree Chompers, that's why I feel a compulsory retests should be introduced.

Agree re continuous refreshers - as a professional I have to do this and I don't have the ability to injure or kill unlike when I'm in the car.

By coincidence I am doing a speed awareness course on Saturday (57 in a 50 because I didn't slow down from national speed limit quick enough). Am actually looking forward to it. Probably will learn more than I expect to.

For me its people too bone idle to burn a few calories just by flicking their finger up or down on the indicator stalk to let others know their intentions at roundabouts/junctions etc.
The number of times I could have safely pulled out but had to wait just to see if they will carry on or turn left. Grrrrrrr >:(
