anyone have knowledge on SMG systems

Post by shadrack » Tue Mar 12, 2013 11:56 am

Right so the hunt for an m3 is on!!  I do love smg but scared of it going wrong, done abit of research and the manual\smg use the same getrag 6speed box, the smg has an electronic controlled hydralic opereation of the clutch and manual gear change and it even has the rod that connects to the box as a manual, so I'm thinking (after doing full auto-manual conversion on e30). In the event of a smg failure could you not put a new pedal box, slave and master clutch cylinder connection, propshaft and gear linkage on, pull out the loom for smg and be a full fledged manual fo peanuts??

Might as well just by the manual in the first place  ;) having diven a few some 10 years ago, I found parking them was a pain in the ar$e, driving at low speed around town was also not a great experience, very jerky. Out on the open road, cleary much better. But I'd still have a 6 speed man any day. As for swapping an SMG into a manual, that sounds lots of work to me. You have a head start as you handy on the tools. Best go drive one and see what you think  :)

I do want a manual, just I'm thinking if the perfect car comes up and its smg! I have only driven smg m3, but had a maual in every other engine, as u say its great on the open road and I imagine a track (quite fancy a track day or 2) but as said I found it a PITA to park on the drive what I do like is the auto mode when just cruising steadily

M3 Smg are great cars and faster than the manual cars
It's just not every one knows how to fix them
Need to make sure the have a software update software

I might have my convertible m3 Smg  up for sale if the insurance broker Dosent let my staff drive it any to shows this year

If I do sell it I will put a new flywheel and clutch in it before I do
