I've been offered the opportunity to but the freehold of my property which currently has about 930years left on the lease. The actual boundary goes in excess of the garden etc. and the freehold would cover half of the road which is partially unadopted. I was wondering what the + and -'s of owning the freehold are?
I'm more concerned with whether I'd suddenly become liable if someone broke their ankle on a kerb etc. and if I'd suddenly become liable for maintaining the drains etc in the area. Also, can anybody go and buy the freehold and then just suddenly impose sanctions upon you?
A bit of further info - within the land are a couple of water drains and a BT access point for cables. I rarely struggle to park outside my own home and I'm not the sort of person to then put no parking signs up.

Hi need a few more answers to really help, in addition to your is there any other property on the site? how much are you and any others paying to the freeholder?
It would also be a good idea to have a good read through the land registry documents, as some can bring up some funny stuff.
Regarding being held liable good signage and or lighting should do the trick, or you could try to sell or gift the road part back to the council.
