A few questions.....

Post by Jinja » Sat Feb 23, 2013 7:20 pm

I have a couple of questions regarding some of the items in the my X5...

What do these lights indicate?
Image

What are the three lights for on top of the sat unit (in green)?
Image

Also, the paperwork states that I've had the upgraded speaker system, can anyone tell me what that means in terms of types and output of the speakers maybe?

There are also to 3.5mm jack points in the rear console (rear passengers) that are marked TV in and out, what are these for?

Thatnks in advance guys :D

Hi Jinja,

I was of the opinion that the lights on the rev counter were to warn you when the engine was cold and not to go into this area, but I see your engine is warm, so maybe an issue.

Not sure about q. 2-3

The jack points are to allow the use of aux items such as psp, but not sure if it works with the front screen or only when screens fitted to rear.

I'm sure the lights go out as the engine warms up till thre all out warning you not to rev into that range .

Can't remember fully I'm sure that's what it is had it on the 4.8is , I'm sure someone will correct me  :)

Looking at the water temp gauge the engine was warm when the picture was taken.

The lights on the Nav screen, are tied to the factory Bluetooth, when your on the phone the right hand light is green, when your dialing the middle one is red, and the left one.. I think its when you have no signal, not sure on that one.

The rev counter lights are there to say don't rev the engine any higher, usually its linked to engine being too cold or two hot. perhaps a faulty sensor

Isnt that an oil temp guage sitting at no temperature at all.. probably why the rev lights are on?

Do you have the rare optional webasto auxillary heater, that would heat up the water/coolent before the engine had reached full operating temperature. Common on Diesel, rare as hens teeth on petrols.

E53 had 3 speaker packages

Base speakers, 70-15000 hz (officially), but not much high end response, 6 speakers (1 in each back door, 1 in front doors, and 2 on dash) The base system uses 2ohm woofers driven directly from the amps built into the radio module.

Hifi system 50-20000 hz, 10 speakers, (2 in each back door, 2 in each front doors, and 2 in dash) (All speakers 8 ohms), an extra amp fitted in boot under CD changer.

HiFi Top/DSP, 10 speaker + sub, not sure the quoted frequency response :P

Even though some of the speakers look the same each speaker set does have different spec woofers in the doors.

I think the dash mids are the same on all versions. And the dsp and hifi setup use the same tweeters.

Tv in and out is mono sound plus composte video so you can connect a portable DVD player to the tv module and out is a headphone socket I think the system can allow backseat to watch tv and listen with headphones on allowing it to override tv in motion lock for back seats only.

It will allow DVD on the front monitor when parked.  Via the tv module in the av input mode.

Correct about the recommend Rev limit lights. I notice your water coolant temp is sitting normal but your oil temp is not. My 4.6 is also the same I wouldn't worry. I know the oil takes a hell of lot longer to warm up over the water coolant, Again it's a big lump so there's a lot of oil to get warm. The lights round the outside go out gradually as the engine warms up. If your oil temp is sitting in the middle (Warmed up) and the lights are still on then you have a problem.

Correct the lights on the head unit are the status of the bluetooth and the phone connected.

To find out if you have the DSP upgraded stereo press the menu button and if you see DSP listed in the menu then you have the DSP option alternatively you can check the boot. If you open the right hand cover and see two subwoofers in there you have the DSP for sure.

Hope this helps.

James

Just to add to the replies...... the lights on the rev counter go out one by one as the engine warms up - I believe its an Alpina feature which is what the 4.8is and 4.6is derivatives are.  They should definitely not stay lit up like a Xmas tree at full operating temp. In my 4.8, the lights have always gone out quite steadily and quickly within the first few minutes of driving.

My oil temp gauge on my 4.8is barely if ever, gets to the middle. The oil cooler on these cars is very efficient. Mine usually sits just over the quarter mark, possibly slightly higher if its very hot outside and I am doing a lot of stop start town driving.

The three little lights next to the display are the Bluetooth pairing status and also show if there is a Mobile signal or not, when the bluetooth is paired and there is no signal. They are traffic light coded, red, yellow, green.

The "upgraded speakers" you are referring to must surely be the DSP amp ?  If you have the upgrade it will be on the main menu on the screen, and show as "DSP" .  You also know if you have this by checking on the drivers side of the boot, the DSP amp is fitted just in front of the rear light cluster behind a panel which clips open.

As mentioned the lights in the rev counter indicate the oil temperature, a feature of the M cars

Oil takes far longer than water to warm up hence the descipency between the gauge and the lights. It can take a good 15 miles for the oil in the Porsche to be up to temperature.

It is an ///M car feature. And as said its tied to the oil temp. You can see from the pick the oil is not up to temp and one of the lights has gone out so appears to be working.

Thanks guys.  Yep, the lights do take a while to go out, usually 5-8 miles or so....  I thought it would be tied to the engine/oil temperature tbh, just wanted to make sure I wasn't being dumb....lol

I'm trying to source an Hauligan replacement head unit, but can't seem to find one for sale any where!  Can some one point me in the right direction please.....
