Hands Free, Power Tailgate

Post by Don Coffey » Tue Feb 19, 2013 8:59 pm

Have you guys seen the latest Ford advert showing the woman waving her leg at the rear bumper and this activates the power tailgate.  I have to admit to thinking that's a very good idea.  On the whole the powered tailgate is a novelty, and when you actually need it, you either have to try and balance whatever it is you're carrying to get to the key or touch the handle.

Do you think something similar could filter down to new model Xs?

In my defence the powered tailgate is standard on the X6 and it does come across as a little posey I know.  But there are times when the feature is useful, say carrying a heavy awkward load so you need only touch the key fob release or indeed touch the boot handle. I just think Fords idea works better.

I would be interested in any ideas you may have Lez.

Of course she might have dropped the key somewhere about her person abd by wafting her leg at the car gets the Comfort Access to work?  Either that or they've cut the bit where she kicks the back of the car and the tailgate springs open from being booted...... :))

It is a 'Found Off Road Dead' after all..... :P

My brothers new 3 has this.

Ford like to show it as if its a reason to buy the car, like Peugeot with its touch screen  ::)

Does it activate in a similar way?

I saw the ad and couldn't help thinking that when it goes wrong in a few years you'll be waving your foot and wham! Spitting teeth  :))

Some audis have it and I think it is a great idea, has to be ordered with comfort access though which would make sense.
Currently :
2012 Audi RS4 (B8)
2012 Porsche Boxster S (981)
2008 Lotus Exige S (a bit modified!)
2015 Nissan Leaf twin turbo with Nitros

Previously :
2008 BMW X5 3.0sd MSport
2005 BMW 535d MSport

Yes BMW already have this technology but apparently it doesn't work all that well, you need to move your foot in precisely the right place and movement to activate the boot.

The powered bootlid is a fantastic option, I'm happy enough to just press the keyfob or passenger presses the button in the dash.

I think it's standard on the new 3 series touring, not sure about about the saloon
