Strange sound from front of car

Sounds like the noise the power steering used to make on the first gen BMW Mini.... Continually cycles between high and lower pitch but only when aircon fan is on. Any ideas folks?

Could be the compressor cycling in and out, or the a/c fan doing the same?

If the sound is like a humming from the interior heating water pump, very faint when radio is low. it does sound like mine and i was told this was normal when I took a BMW mechanic out for a listen.

After doing a bit of research on google it does seem to be a very common BMW problem, I'd be interested to know if any other e70 owners have this noise when the heating fan is set to one or two bars after at least 15 min of driving.

Got the power steering recall work done yesterday and seems to have stopped the noise. From what you lot know of the recall could it have caused the noise I described?

I also have had the recall done in the last week but still hear the noise when radio is on low, will have a look under the bonnet next time it happens to see if its anything obvious
