X5 xDrive40D fuel economy

I've had my X5 xDrive40D for 3 months now and am somewhat disappointed with the fuel economy on this car. I know BMW probably overstate the figures slightly, but I'm doing a 30 mile return journey to work each day on country A roads including the A23 dual carriageway into Crawley and I'm not hammering it. Not much stop start, and I'm averaging 27mpg, well short of the figures quoted for the car's urban cycle, let alone the combined quoted figure of 37.7 mpg! Otherwise the car is magnificent, road holding fantastic and just great fun to drive. Only other gripe is the quality of the sound from the BMW business speakers - see separate post on this.

Any advice or comparisons on the mpg would be appreciated.

Sounds about right to me

They don't seem to get anywhere near the combined. It takes a very gently cruise to even hit the combined!

I'm looking at remapping mine to help this but you can't remap yours yet

It may get better as you get more miles on it

After 11000 km on my 35d I am getting about 30mpg (imperial). That said it's been in for a recall today for the diesel electronics module (DDE) and an air mass sensor so I'll report later on what that does to economy. I do about 25kM each way to work - mixture of in town stop and start and motorway at about 65mph.

My 40d with 20" Jetsers (Front 275, rear 315) doesn't get near the combined, let alone the highway consumption. Even when driving like a slug, slowing down on the engine brake etc I never ever hit the combined. The lowest I ever saw was 32.8mpg (and that was on a 10 mile run .. any longer than that and I would have either fallen asleep or eaten the steering wheel).
I average at 24.5 mpg driving normally (that is soms start stop traffic and a tad of highway, but never- if hardly - really slamming it).
Driving on the highway on CC at 80 mph I get around 28mpg ... this is VERY far of the rated 41.5 mpg (Extra Urban)

I am quite disappointed by the consumption and can only hope that it will settle a bit over time (the car has now 2500 miles).

Another possible solution might be to have the car chip-tuned to lower consumption.

Well you seem to be getting the same figures as I have then .....and I know myself .. once I get more confident and have more miles on it I will most probably be hitting the upper half of the speedo far more often and I will most probably make use of the engine the way it was made for

It IS disappointing though ... a friend of mine is driving a Porsche 997 Turbo S and is getting the same figures we get, but then again that is a petrol sports car ... and he is driving his PDK gearbox in sports all the time !

I wouldn't hold out much hope for improved economy...my SD has done just under 20,000 miles...I do have roof bars and bike racks on the car but the most I would expect to see on a motorway at a steady 70 mph is 27 or 28 mpg. I have NEVER seen 30 mpg!

In urban traffic it's low 20's. I have no idea how BMW got the figures they claimed....I'd say it's misleading!

I did a little economy run this morning using the dynamic cruise control, slow starts, engine braking etc etc and managed to get as low as 31 mpg. If I were 70, this would be a viable way to drive, but then again I would have bought a Kia

Think id rather stick with my 29mpg if thats all its gonna change by.

I've been in talks with one of the big tuners again about a remap but this time I'm less interested in performance (although 350bhp shouldn't be sniffed at ) and more about adding a few extra mpg units.

I think all of your MPG sounds great I am not sure of any manufacturers that quoted figures come out exactly as they say. The X5 is a big lump of luxury car you will all survive.

Where at - I spoke with one from bmwland and he said there wasn't a map available for the E70 yet?
