Your 'poll' has the same choices for both voting options.....rigged election?
Sounds like you need to take the battery off for 30 mins and then try again.

Re: blank screen but still got sound for nav, radio and cd
You could try "rebooting" the BM54 radio, which I believe also contains the computer that generates all the menus, and controls on the front screen. (The screen is just a fairly dumb panel, there is even a youtube video where someone managed to hook up a 17inch computer monitor instead).
Just unplug the connector on the BM54, or pull the appropriate fuses. You may need to reboot the Nav computer as well.
Perhaps you dislodged the BM54 cable while you disconnected the battery? Or a fuse may have blown etc.

Re: blank screen but still got sound for nav, radio and cd
I believe there is a fuse on the BM54 module itself, hidden within the spaghetti of wires in the quadlock connector (Red 10A if memory serves).
I can't remember the other vehicle front fuse box fuse numbers though.....could be 7 & 41, but there may be others.

I'm thinking as you say you can see the display panel lighting up (just nothing on it). That its more likely to be the control module (bm54) rather than the screen itself.
It's probably easiest to check by disconnecting the quadlock. if your not sure which fuse to pull. A few minutes unplugged should be enough to let it get its brain back in order .. Less but I never like powering anything computer based on and off too much, so a few minutes is a general rule of thumb
BM54's are almost always repairable if there is something wrong. There's a guy on m3cutters and bmw5 forums who does a lot of them. Repairs, amp upgrades, Bluetooth streaming... line outputs.. whatever you fancy..
Good luck with it!

Re: blank screen but still got sound for nav, radio and cd
Do any of the buttons on the monitor still work, even though your working blind.. volume control, next track, chance disk etc?
Or the steering wheel controls... Plus if you have the "high" dash, do you get CD/Song number on the dash when trying to change?
Could still be the BM54 being tied up in knots and not working right (reboot it), or something as simple as a loose connector so it cant "see" the monitor up front. Give the connectors a good wiggle. And while your at it, check for any water or other problems in/around/under the battery / radio/electronics areas.
It probably wont hurt to try and reboot the navigation computer if you have one.. Above your CD player in the cubby
Hope you find the problem.

Re: blank screen but still got sound for nav, radio and cd
yes i can use the buttons , for radio , cd tracks and the track number comes up on the instrument cluster, so all sound is fine just no info on screen

Re: blank screen but still got sound for nav, radio and cd
Sound like your bm54 is ok. I would still try rebooting it and check the quad lock wasn't disturbed when you worked on the battery.
Peobably wouldn't hurt to pull the fuse for the display as all just in case.

Re: blank screen but still got sound for nav, radio and cd
I did a bit more digging around. When installed the navigation computer is the one with the rgb output controlling the monitor.
Do you have any lights on the nav computer?
One thing I read which may be worth a try. Remove your map cd/DVD and then disconnect the nav computer to restart it.
After you reconnect the computer it should reboot and the you can replace the map disk.
If that doesn't help you may need to get a nav computer firmware disk and reload the computers software.
If you have a tv module disconnecting the nav computer may force the tv to take over. It won't work properly but it would prove the screen is still working ok.
Hope that gets you some stuff to try.
