Messing about on BMW VIN decoder to see my spec. Spotted:

There was an article in the news a few days back that reported on more and more car manufacturers now coming to the UK for testing because our roads are so bad......how embarrassing is that!!

I love the fact there is a German word to sum up our dire roads...  a recent trip to Scotland suggests they are much worse up there than in England too.

What a shocker!  And with all the spending cuts they will be getting a lot worse too.  Having a 4x4 could become essential just to make it across London in one piece ...  :(  :))

:)) you beat me to it. I was about to say at least next time someone asks why a 4x4, we can just say "it's the state of the roads you see."

The roads around my way are breaking up like no ones business.  They grow bigger and deeper by the day.  They must be causing lots of damage to unsuspecting motorists!

Wonder if that's a Retrofit option for e53. The roads around here are terrible if its not potholes its subsidence making a very uneven surface. Pretty dangerous on a bendy road too.

Would probably get a smoother ride off road!!

I'll never forget going on a star gazing excursion when in Egypt - the exact opposite.  We piled into a fleet of landcruisers, travelled on a brand new immaculate tarmac road (couldn't believe how good it was - the opposite of what I'd expected), with a strict 50 mph speed restriction.  Then, without warning we broke off onto the dirt and nailed it - 80mph across the desert for quite a while to head away from light pollution.  Great thing to do if you ever get a chance ...

I think that the literal translation of Schlechtwegepaket is "rough driving package"

Just for the benefit of anyone searching on this again; I have been doing so for a mate on BMWLänder and trawling through the German-speaking forums for an answer.

Basically, it's less about making the vehicle softer or comfy over bad roads, but it actually increases the ride height.  So when the Germans are talking about "schlechte Wege" they're actually talking about more of the offroad type scenarios where more ground clearance is required.

The parts are effectively just an insert to raise by c. 10-22mm

The option has been available on vehicles since the E36 and many Germans spec it for the winter in order to give them better clearance when it snows.  As anyone who uses winter tyres in non-SUVs knows, it is often the limitation of the clearance at the front splitter rather than tyres when the snow comes.

HTH when people are looking at their VINs going forward.

That certainly matches what VW Group do for their 'rough road package'.  In their case it's a 15mm raise in ground clearance.  Not that 15mm does much for the average saloon car!
