Crappy glovebox

Post by Hoppy_70 » Mon Feb 11, 2013 6:35 pm

When my glovebox is released, it opens about a centimetre and sometimes even closes again!

I'd assumed this was crap design but when I tried a new one at the dealers it opened all the way with a nice fluid motion.

Anyone know how to fix it?

Get some WD40 out and oil up the mech.  Here's a diagram:

Couple of months ago I opened my glove box, and the top lid was all floppy ie spring loading failed.  I was expecting a several hundred pound repair bill (new parts, need to remove the gear box first etc), but fortunately fixed under warranty. Makes me think the dealers are used to seeing them fail...

Wow, that is possibly the most comprehensive glovebox article I've ever seen!

Thanks

12 page instruction manual on the glove box!!??  I dread to think how long the manuals are on more technical components, such as the cup holder shutters, or the optional rear sun blinds ...  :))

wow, that glovebox you guys have on the later models may just be a little over engineered!  It's just a storage hole for God's sake......  >:D

It's a BMW......no such thing as 'just a storage hole' to their engineers.  But I agree.  Totally OTT, and if it breaks outside warranty the bill will be vast!

I only tend to use the glovebox for documents and use it a couple of times a year.  Yes they are small, but certainly in my case, were it bigger then more useless sh1t1e would be left in there.
