so im on 22s but the tyres have massive treads, went up this (very steep 1 in 3 hill) flew up no loss of traction and this x5 is definatly better grip than my y reg one, turned around at the top and desided to try the hill decent control, and it came down the hill perfect no slipping at all and thats good as its a ditch at one side and a wall at the other on single road! :)

Well thought I'd post in here, I have just used hill decent down a steep road.
No other car as been down, no gritters have been out as well.
TBH I was bricking it, it struggled to stop in a straight flat road ABS was going mad.
But nice steady speed all the way down, well impressed.

Got to agree - don't use it often but on those occasions it gives a great sense of security.  Good for going up hills too!

never had a chance to try this on the X, but i've had the pleasure of playing with hill descent about 3 times now, in the landrover expereince centre (they thought i'd buy an RRS not an X5  :P ) once in a vogue, another time in a range rover sports..

unbelievable control. if i had to come down those slopes with just hte brake and accelerator..  specially in teh conditions i had one day in rain and mud i'm not sure if i could have managed it!

I went to the one near Luton and drove the Vogue.  Really nice car and amazing what it can do. I also did the VW one when I bought my Touareg a few years ago and that was equally impressive.  It managed to climb up a slippery muddy slope that I definitely wouldn't have been able to walk up!

When the snow was really bad Xmas 2010 our X3 got rear ended and we were given a brand new Disco 4 whilst It was being repaired. I promptly got it stuck at the top of the steepest, snowiest dirt track I could find. I couldn't get back down !
At one point I was in reverse spinning the wheels while still sliding down and was thinking I'd have to go through the field next to me. Then remembered the HDC and its amazing how easily it copes, have use it a few times in the X5 and taught the wife how to use it.

(apologies for being too new to make a wisecrack, but...)

"taught the wife how to use it"

1. Here's a button that looks like it has a picture of a duck on it.
2. When you're at the top of a slippery hill; press it.
3. Steer

Anything else?

Don't worry about being to new for that.......I mean 535dboy hasn't even got a BMW, but we still let him subject the rest of us to his humour.. >:D

I think you can vary the speed of HDC by using the cruise control lever to set a speed between 4 - 15mph
