X5 4.8 wanted
X5 4.8 wanted
Hi all,
No rush but I thought I might as well post on here in the unlikely event that someone has something or is considering selling.
I'm looking for a 2007/8/9 4.8, could be an SE or an M, would really prefer a Space grey with beige leather.
Prepared to pay a very reasonable price for a good example, if you know or have got something that fits the bill then give me a shout

Re: X5 4.8 wanted
Yeah, keeping an eye on Autotrader and Piston Heads, really looking for space grey with beige leather, might consider dark blue.
I'd rather wait for a good one in my choice of colour, seen some real rubbish up to now though
The best one so far was a guy in Oxford, pretty basic spec SE with limited pics on Autotrader. I asked for more pics and one from the front shows a very nasty dent where the grills have been pushed into the bonnet (not mentioned in ad), the guys description was 'excellent condition'....LOL. The joker even wants proper money for it considering it's a private sale with no warranty.
The thing is that all I have seen so far haven't been looked after, with all the different cars i've purchased over the years I think that finding a genuine X5 4.8 is going to be tougher, maybe I won't find one and will move on.

Are you dead set on the V8 then
Client of mine ran both the Twin diesel and V8 and the general conclusions was tha the diesel was the nicer one !

Swings and roundabouts mate. When I was looking for my 3.0 SD M, all I could find was a bucket load of 4.8s! Considerably less than diesels and in excellent condition. Keep looking, it will turn up.

Just been thinking about this, so the 40d is the twin turbo diesel version? Don't know much about them really, is the perfomance similar to the petrol V8 then?

Yes there was the 3.0sd/35d (same car, different badge) which was approx. 286BHP and 416lb/ft and latterly the 40d which has c306BHP and presumably a little bit more torque too but with the 8 speed box over the 6 speed which is seamless and helps economy.
Because of the turbos the overtaking oomph will be more effortless with less need to rev the car hard like you will on the V8. The latter wouldn't be a problem if it sounded awesome but it is quite subdued really so you don't even have the benefit of the lovely noise.
Economy of course will be a lot better too.
Just my view on having driven both
However the V8s can look better value now but you will still have to sell it at some point!

+1 having got the old 3.0d its fairly quick and the 30sd ive driven was realy quick in mid range torque and even if not bothered the economy of the diesel will make its resale value alot better

Re: X5 4.8 wanted
So, the 30sd/35d are both twin turbo's ? Taking a brief look, the 40d's seem later models and possibly over my price range.
All the above models come as 8 speed autos?

Yes all those I mentioned are TT
No 8 speed only with 40d

Re: X5 4.8 wanted
I will be selling my 4.8 soon if you are still looking , it's a very high spec 2008 with 43K miles and full dealer history, 7 seats Monaco blue ,black nappa leather , adaptive drive , professional audio, sat nav , HUD, DAB, soft close doors, powered boot lid, panoramic roof , reverse camera , digital TV+ many more options, also just had new Dunlop run flats fitted all round last week. I can get a full list from my BMW dealer if you are interested, I think I still have the original invoice which was just short of £70K.

Both the 4.8 and 40d take around 6.5 secs to 60. The more recent 50i is another step up at 5.5 or thereabouts from memory. Haven't driven the 4.8 but have the 40d and am still amazed by how hard it can pull - when it's such a big heavy car. I would like a V8 rumble mind, but personally would want the extra oomph of the 50i to make the economy hit worth taking ...
