Rear tyres sizes

Hi all

Just been to my local tyre garage and they have said I can fit 255/50 r19 to my sport instead of having 285/45 r19 on the rear is this true? If so does it have any effect on the car ie ruining the diff?

Technically yes but the wheel set up you have for the rear is staggared which means wider and will look funny with the thinner tyres. The diameter should be ok though

I think it would look odd, I've see x5,s with aftermarket rims on with the same width front an rear and they don't look as good, also rear rims are wider to suit the 285's

It won't affect the diff or have any negative impact, other than looking stretched on the wider rear alloys. It's all about the rolling circumference front/rear. This isn't effected so no probs.

As long as the tyres meet the manufacturers spec you are fine, if not then technically and in reality your car would be 'modified' and you should tell your insurers.  If the rims are the same size front and rear then OK.  If staggered then maybe not so much....

Manufacturers fit combinations for a reason and you will lose 30mm of tread width per side.  You would have to ensure that an adjusted weight rating tyre is fitted if you go narrower.  The E53 is primarily biased as rear wheel drive so you're removing grip capability.

Your call, but IMHO not a wise move.  Your tyres are a 'safety critical' piece of your car.  Do you want to take that kind of chance with your and your family's/passengers safety for a few quid?

I would look on the Internet to check, look at other makes , read up on them first. Some give better ratings than the Michelins. Look on the Tyremen site, they have a great service, deliver to your local tyres hop for fitting if you want.
Where are you based, someone on here may advise where to go and get a good deal on tyres, I'm sure there is only about £20 a tyre difference between front and rear .

Many on here run winter tyres which in most circumstances are same front/rear width. BMW themselves offer such setups as winter packages so there really is no issue with the tyre size itself. As previous the only real reason for not running it is due to the alloy itself you are mounting the tyre on being I a different width to the front. .

BMW Winter set-ups are often not staggered rims though....just to make it clearer (in case it wasn't).....so are matched front and rear.  Other Winter set-ups (such as those on my X6) are staggered, though a non-staggered option also - and a little confusingly - exists.

I know the rims are same width also but was more to highlight that running the 255 at the back isn't an issue for running on the car and won't cause any adverse problems.
