MPG

Post by Benstan » Thu Feb 07, 2013 11:02 pm

Had a good run home tonight (admittedly not too much traffic) but thought I'd show proof that the X5 can sip the motion lotion and not just guzzle it.

What was your cruising speed?  I do mostly clear 'A' roads and have tried different speeds but haven't seen as high as that.  That said, I do live in a hilly area so the last few miles will always reduce any average.

Over 700 miles on a tank, now that would be nice.

It depends on when the figures were reset, every car I have ever owned settles around 40mph for average speed over time.

I wish I could get 40mpg plus out of ours. The best I managed was 34.5mpg calculated but ours is a 57 but pre Efficient Dynamics.

That shows the average speed for the journey.  Benstan could have been cruising at 50 when on clear stretches of road.  This is what I'm interested to know.

Doesn't the computer reset all stats which I assume is what has been done to get the figure that high!

Hi - listen to Radio 4 and you don't want to go fast....it's very calming and the digital radio (part of the media pack I think) is something I could never do without now (5 live on DAB is the only way to go!)

I probably cruised for 7 miles at 50 (due to ave speed cameras out of London) and then went up to 65 for 10 miles and then country roads for the last 2-3 - I was at 42.2 until the last mile home.  The 'trick' I've learned (and it's hardly insightful) is to stop using the cruise control, which I used to use all the time.  Taking the foot off the gas a little down a small incline makes fractional difference to the speed but can give 5-10mpg extra over a journey easily.

This morning, driving into London in heavy queuing traffic, I got 36mpg.

I wish I could get my other half to stop using the cruise control.  She uses it a every possible opportunity - often inappropriately (in my view).

I have the adaptive cruise control on my new car plus active lane assist which actually steers the car too as you start to cross the line

All of these features are very handy because they allow me to keep texting and emailing whilst on the move.

Shame it affects the fuel economy though!

that would do 10mpg better than the X5 can.  It would average 40 but could do 55mpg on a relaxed cruise.  Despite its challenging looks (which I will get used to in time), the new X5 with a 2 litre diesel will be pretty compelling for me.
