Is my 35d actually a 30d???

Post by Chief1409 » Tue Feb 05, 2013 8:54 pm

This is a strange one. After the wife's altercation with the gate post the car has just been returned from the insurance company's recommended bodyshop. Only thing is that the car has come back with 30d badges instead of the 35d badges it went in with!!!

The bodyshop reckons that when the chassis number is entered into the "system" it shows up as a 30d and they were duty bound to replace the badges when they were doing the respray....

I'm totally stumped on this one. I can only imagine that the "system" is wrong. Nothing else we've done with the car (insurance, VIN number on realOEM etc) has said anything other than 35d and that's obviously what we were after when purchasing. If in the highly unlikely event it does turn out to be the case then what recourse do I have with the dealer?

There must be some clues in the engine bay that prove you have a 35d over the 30d.

The main one will be the extra turbo, perhaps some kind 35d owner will post up pics of their engine bay for you to compare.

System often gets it wrong. My X5 comes up as a bloody X3 sometimes!

Surely the V5 (log book) will have something on it to confirm its engine make up.  Failing that, what co2 is on the V5, isn't there a difference between the single and twin turbo models?

Put the last 7 characters of your VIN into one of the on line VIN decoders and see what comes back.

Piccies here of a 35d engine if it helps..

A quick search tells me that 2009 models are CO2 (g/km): 214.0 for the single Turbo, and CO2 (g/km): 216.0 for the twin.  So a quick look at he V5 and all confirmed.

They could of course have been muppets and assumed a '35d' is a 3.5 litre rather than one of the twin turbo versions of the 3.0d......same issue with the 40d and 50d which are all the same lump with different/extra hairdryers.

Interesting one that one!

Maybe she hit the gate so hard the second turbo fell off?

I'm sure you're probably driving around I'm the car you think you own. As suggested earlier a picture of a 35d engine bay from another member will confirm.

I remember some years ago my 996 was an Opel Manta according to the V5 for a short while!

Haha! I'm sure all is well and the garage have just made a mistake or the "system" is wrong. Our old Tiguan was a Passat for most of its ownership.....

Bull crap, if they have taken anything off your car without permission it's theft!!!  Ge a report from BMW and get them to replace your badges.

Which 'system' were they using?

Sounds to me like what was mentioned earlier and someone thought it should be a 3.5 engine to carry those badges, not knowing the twin turbo bit.
