X5 40d xdrive, how good is it?!
Re: X5 40d xdrive, how good is it?!
I'd certainly expect the mpg to be pretty low on that type of inner city journey.

sure, it must be accurate. if not what is the point of having numbers. saying that I am enjoying driving the car.
Re: X5 40d xdrive, how good is it?!
Maybe it's the obc on the CLS that is faulty

Re: X5 40d xdrive, how good is it?!
'Real world' data on Honestjohn.co.uk records the average for the 40d around 28.7 as against the stated 37.7. That figure is roughly what I get on my X6 too. That's a real figure accuracy of only 77%, which is fairly typical for the X5 & X6 models.
The average motorist is now paying 15% more overall for fuel when compared to what they should be paying if going by the official figures. All of which confirms how much of a joke the 'official' data really is. Of course the UK Gov won't do anything about is as it is coining it in the extra fuel duty.
Why the EC figures do not represent true MPG
The prescribed EC test is a lab test carried out to simulate a mix of different types of driving and arrive at ‘combined’ CO2 emission and fuel consumption figures.
Because vehicle taxation in Europe is now based on CO2 emissions, manufacturers naturally optimise their engines to achieve the lowest possible CO2 in the tests - this skews the true MPG.
This gives a correspondingly low fuel consumption figure. Unfortunately the relevant EC Directives prescribe that this figure and only this figure can be publicised by manufacturers, even though it is unlikely to be achieved by the average driver in real life conditions.

This sounds more likely or it wasn't re-set like the X5 one was

What has your dealer said about the low mpg? Nothing wrong with the BMW figures as they are consistent with all other manufacturers figures, more like something wrong with your car.

Re: X5 40d xdrive, how good is it?!
Hello everyone. My dealer find figures to be too low and I should get much more out of it. I took into consideration many of the comments to let engine loosen a bit so I took it on motorway (M4) and I gave it a good seeing too. I stopped once and came back at the Swindon junction. I got 23.9 mpg. The car drives very well and I think if everyone agrees with me we should just close this subject for now. I am happy with this baby. I will give you an update if things improve. Thanks to all and take care.

Worth keeping an eye on. Hope the economy improves with more driving. I would reckon on low 30s for a reasonably fast motorway cruise.

Yes, I hope it improves. Enjoy the car. Don't forget to add some pics to the thread in the gallery section.

Re: X5 40d xdrive, how good is it?!
I would imagine it would take up to 10K miles to get things well on it's way to being run in. I have known cars to improve until 40K, thereafter who can tell.
I think that you are worrying too soon as everything is still mechanically tight. Give it time and treat it right and all will come good in the end (can't wait to see the comments on that one
)
JMHO, but enjoy the car
