I saw it's on BBC2 later so will give it a go until I fall asleep.  Does anyone know the rules - never understood it?!

Got taken to a match in San Francisco/Oakland area (can't remember which stadium now) at Xmas in 1976....I think one of the teams was the Oakland Raiders.  Four hours of play later I had no idea what the rules were!  It wasn't football, and it wasn't rugby and seemed to involve a load of guys in helmets and body armour running around in 30 second stages and then needing to suck on pure Oxygen..... ??? ???

Still don't understand the game today either.....

Although I lived in San Fran area for a few months and did go to see the Niners play I always liked the the cowboys.

As for rules, very simply you have 4 attempts (downs) to make 10 or more yards.
So 1st and 10, gain 3 yards so then 2nd and 7 for eg.

Points are a touchdown worth 6 points by making the ball break the goal line of the end zone.
Usually kick an extra point after (for 1 point). You can (rarely though) go for 2 points by running or passing it into the end zone again.

If you get to 4th down and can't make 10 yards you kick it, called punting, to the other team. If close enough you can try a kick (not from the hand) for 3 points. This is a field goal.

Only other way to score (again rare) is to tackle a player in his own end zone. It's called a safety and worth 2 points.

Hope that helps. Loads more but it's a start.

Thanks for that!  Certainly a start to not be totally clueless as to what the heck is going on!  Appreciate it.  :)

Stuck with it up to the power failure at 28-6.  Not sure I'll bother next year, as the vast majority of time is spent faffing around ahead of the next brief bit of play.  Still quite an experience to watch for a while.  As far as I can tell Americans get more excited about the special commercials and half time show .....

Unfortuntately it was only after the 'lights out' episode that it got really exciting. I have the flu and a heavy cough so haven't slept for 2 nights, so another one didn't matter!

When a one hour game lasts four (not accounting for power loss) then something's wrong......I can't really watch as I end up just shout at the TV.....'will you just get on with it and play the bloody game!'  8)

Fair enough, I guess I just don't flinch as I have followed the game for around 30 years.

I like the tactics behind the game. Everyone sees the physical side but the sheer volume of strategy is often overlooked.

Didn't stay up in the end but watched it Monday having managed not to see the result. I thought it was an amazing game.  I think I'll be watching a lot more next season!
