Tyre Recommendations

Post by philip600 » Tue Jan 29, 2013 7:46 pm

Hi,
I've been running my X5 with staggered 20's fitted with  Toyo Proxes S/T's & have been very happy with them but it would appear that they have stopped producing this pattern & the 275/40 fronts are no longer available.
I will be needing some soon & have been looking around at alternatives.
I have always been wary of the Chinese / cheap, less well known makes but recently tyre manufactures have had to state the rating of the tyres wet weather performance, economy & noise & was suprised when comparing, some premium ( expensive ) brands have worse ratings than certain tyres costing half as much. I presume these tests are conducted independantly, if so, should I be worried about the fact that the manufacture is less well know as long as the new ratings are good ?
Has anyone any recommendations with tyres on the 20" staggered rims ?
It's a shame as I really rate the Toyo S/T
( my  rears still have plenty of life in them so will only be swapping the fronts initially although I like to keep all the tyres the same pattern so would want to change the rears to match the fronts when the time comes )
Many thanks, Phil.

Hi Phil, I have been running Yokohama Advan 110Y ST Tyres for a few months now and they are great up to now in the dry and wet. The tread pattern is really good and the price not too bad either. They are non run flats. Worth a look. I paid £800 for all 4 fitted from EARS Motorsport in Macclesfield. Jeff

Hi Phil, which comparison site did you use?  I have to get new tyres shortly and I'd like to get the best possible tyres I can for my money.  Tyres is the one thing I like to spend a little more on as they are the only 4 contact points with the road.

Hi Jeff, thanks for the recommendation. I did look at the Yoko's but do they have a rim protector band on them ?

Thehinch - I haven't used a comparison site as such, I just do a search with the likes of Black Circles, Costco, Camskill etc. Most sites should you the new ratings now.

Not sure to be honest. Don't think so looking at the tyre info on the web site.

I was looking at 22" yesterday and the car shop recommended Yokohama I think Prada as said drivers getting mid 20k out of them, sounded pretty good for the money
