I've found that if you have a private plate, I found it easier when I am going to sell it, is to put the plate on retention, similar process but they revert the car back to its old plate when you still own it. You can then assign it to your new car when you get it , or as I have done let the dealer do it for you.
If you are going to use we buy AC they will not buy cars with personnel plates on

Local offices wont do same day transfers, but they "may" do retention certificate assignment to car same day if your really lucky, as they only need to approve it and issue the tax disc.

I didn't want to mess around, so I put my plate on retention, Now my new X's V5 has arrived, I'll get it assigned my plate. (I was going to just dump the cherished plate with my old car.. but I'm too tight, when I spotted the average price of similar Northern Ireland plates, I figured I might as well keep it!). Its nothing special, but easy to remember.

Putting my plate on retention I got all my documents back in just under 1 week. I filled in all the paper work at a DVLA local office as I wanted to SORN the E39, and get my tax disk refunded, and the plate on retention all at the same time.

Hate the fact our government is closing the local offices.. The staff at Worcester DVLA are super helpful!

Anyway, although its not same day DVLA are not "that" slow most of the time.

Putting a plate on retention or straight transferring from car to car takes about 14 days tbh to get all the docs back including V5C. They say 6 weeks or something to cover their backs in extreme circumstances. Putting a retentioned plate on to your car can be same day if you're lucky at a local office but even then they can send you off and you have to wait about 5 days for the tax disc, etc to turn up.

Very true - often same day, however I've just had a really odd one with mine and I've done lots of transfers (from car to car & from cert to car)!

Anyway, just purchased my 5 GT so only have the V5/C (green slip), no problem. The only issue I had was that the retention doc was due to expire on 03/02/13  :o

So, in order to save any issues with posting it I popped down to my local DVLA office (Borehamwood) - got their at 8am last Friday (1st Feb) at first the lady said no problem should be done within a few minutes. She took my documents and went away. When she came back within a couple of minutes she said, I'm afraid we can't do this one same day as your vehicle was originally registered in Northern Ireland so further checks have to be done.

She then went on to ask whether I had the tax disk for the current mark, luckily the car was outside so I took it in for her and they photocopied it. I was then informed that I should hear something back Tuesday / Wednesday this week.

So far so good?  I missed a call from a Blocked number whilst at work this morning and when I checked the message it was from the DVLA Borehamwood.

They said they needed the tax disk. So I called back on the number they left in the message (which turns out to be a call centre in Swansea) for them to take a message asking the Borehamwood office to call me back - which they did after about 2 hours!

So when I spoke to the guy, I asked what the issue was as I had already given a photocopy of the tax disk - he told me he needed the original and asked if I could come into the office to surrender it! Really unusual as normally they send out the replacement tax disk and the authorisation certificate to make the new plates with an envelope to return the old tax disk. I queried it and he said that they have had issues lately with people not sending back their old tax disks and that when they get audited they get into trouble!

Really strange - luckily I was able to get back into the office this afternoon (which was packed) explained the issue to the 'meet & greeter' member of staff  who said oh yes we've been expecting you!

Showed her my old tax disk and she came back with the new one and the authorisation certificate. I did ask her again about why they needed the old disk back as I haven't had the new plates made yet and that I'm concerned that until I get the plates made the tax disk won't match whats on the car! She said not to worry about that as the authorities can always query it with the DVLA if anyone were to ask and spun the same line about internal auditors!

Very odd, anyway the plate assignment has been accepted, I have my new tax disk and the all important authorisation certificate. Off to get the plates sorted tomorrow!

Strange - but 10/10 to DVLA Borehamwood for being so efficient, shame that all of the offices are under threat of closure - would make sense to keep some of them at least?
