DVLA / private plate transfer

Post by X Box » Fri Feb 01, 2013 2:41 pm

Any idea how long it takes to get the letter, tax disc, mot, etc back from DVLA?

They got the forms on Wednesday so am counting the days till I can get my plates on.
I have them sitting staring at me  :)

It's the first time I have done this so don't know what sort of wait to expect.

Thanks in advance.

Usually about a week, depending upon how busy they are.....

Although I think they state 2 weeks, you should get something within a week.

If you have a DVLA office locally (they're all scheduled to close by end of 2013 though) you can often assign a registration from a retention certificate on the same day.

It was sent to my local office rather than Swansea. The dealership did it on my behalf.

The plate was a gift from my mother who passed away 3 weeks after giving it so it means a fair amount to me.

afaik they have closed or are closing all the sub locations where you could get it done there and then, now these places only take the application and they send it to swansea, hence the delays..

Over here in Northern Ireland, we are allowed to have the existing car and the one that will be receiving the cherished plate to have the same registration while the paperwork is being processed.  This has happened when transvering to new cars so may only be applicable in this instance.

The dealer told me the logbook takes longer. 4 weeks approx.

But I was told there would be a 'quicker' turn around for tax disc, mot cert and letter of permission to display the plate.

That's right - 7 to 10 days to get the tax disc and the confirmation you can display your transferred plates.

The V5C will take longer 'upto 8 weeks'.

All dependent on where you live and how quickly the local DVLA office processes your request to the main HQ. And then how busy they are....
