I am not a diesel owner - I am Not a mechanic only do he odd bit of diy routine home servicing, ( mainly on the Z3).
If I was buying a 3.0d ( & in abscence of evidence of these things being done), I would cause it to have breather changed ,(there is a newer design on later cars that fits earlier models - dont know the change over date), ensure inlet manifold & MAF cleaned(I would not do MAF myself as easily damaged) , maybe add a tried/tested cleaning additive to the tank & ensure injectors/plugs good as well as oil & oil filter fresh. I would also change air filter & ensure no fault codes present.
Others may disagree but thats what I would look at attending to after 1st taking ownership,(unless very low mileage or evidence of attention to same).
Happy to be corrected..........ideally with reasoned explanation.

i cant find the plugs on mine!:)
Ive had a remap by elite and although the power improvement is great it seems worse at part throttle and the mpg from same route and driving style is down from 29.5 to high 22's! its going back to std and Ill try jasons file. But to be honest it wasnt slow before and I dont want to go much lower than 29 for my normal driving

Thanks all for the comments, Jason, I'll let you know next week after this next journey up and down the country this weekend, hopefully without snow!!
ITB: So far I've kept consum#2 since remap and it's showing 28.8mpg today (was 27.7mpg)
Consum#1 I reset for the journey and got the 31mpg reported the other day. Then I reset it on Monday for the daily commute mpg, which is now averaged out over 4 days and about 60 miles of London driving (built up areas/A312 and M4) showing 20.4mpg, so not 14mpg anymore (previous was 23mpg, but London traffic has been like walking this week due to not getting out of bed early enough )
Monday will be the tell tale average, as then I will have about 1200 miles pre-remap and 1200 miles post-remap with the same locations and mix of driving to make comparison.
AW8: points noted thanks, the car is FBMWSH, with an additional (unneeded and ahead of schedule) oil change by the supplying dealer at the end of December. Air filter and airflow meter are valid points.
As for the tank additive, I'm considering this, even though I've had bad experiences in the past (albeit a different animal, my old Nova back in the 90's got the redex treatment from me bottle in the tank, airbox off and poured in the carb, and some down the plug holes......... the amount of smoke generated when firing it up was unreal! result I thought, nice and clean and carbon free that was very true, it was now carbon free and the engine then progressively rattled itself to destruction in the matter of 2 weeks.

I will make you a few remap files for you to test like I did for Nigel as he does a lot of miles and towing at the same time

Jay, that sounds like a plan, cheers! Anytime that suits you will do for me, well when I'm here I will be down Monday through Thursday.
It would be good to get a comparison of a few, and review them (nicely of course)
I drive as fast as the traffic allows Jason, I like to sit between 90 - 100 when cruising.... The X will hit 130 quite easily but not for sustained periods. I will have to check what the revs are doing when I'm at those speeds, from memory not much but I will check.

Engine wise & in abscence of other invoices FBMWSH means it has had oil & filter changes. The crank case breather is not a scheduled item and I believe air filters take more messing to change on the diesels. Injectors etc unlikely to have been changed unless they completely fail. Apologies no idea on mileage of your car or whats been done to it in past

update for those interested:
Friday drive home, 300 miles, average speed was about 65mph over the journey (between dead stop and 100):
33.4mpg so, I've managed to get more than 32.8mpg on the return very slight, but it's better.
Journey down Monday, 300 miles, average speed was 71mph:
31mpg
Overall average since remap is currently 29.1mpg
Stats for Jason if he reads this:
70mph at 2300 rpm
80mph at 2500 rpm
90mph at 3100 rpm

Just wondering why additional 10mph from 70 to 80 adds 200rpm yet the extra 10mph from 80 to 90 adds 600rpm? Does the gearbox drop a gear to reach 90?
