Tyre speed ratings question

Post by Bolio » Wed Jan 30, 2013 8:50 am

Hi all, I need to buy a new set of front tyres for my x6, The ones it currently has on are Bridgestone Dueler Sports 275/40/20 106y run flat, I have found a new set with an online tyre supplier which again are Bridgestone Dueler Sports run flat but they are a W speed rating rather than a Y. After going into National tyres and asking them to price match they have said that my car needs to have Y rated tyres on as W is rated upto 130mph only, after looking online it says that W rated tyres are upto 168mph so I think they are taking the p**s and are just trying to sell me what they had in stock and of course not honouring the price match. It's a 3.5d X6 which I think has a top speed of about 150 so they are well capable of the cars limit. Do you think it would affect my insurance having a different speed rated tyres on?
Thanks
Bolio

you need to replace with whats on the car..the speed rating is not only for speed but for the way the tyre is constructed to cope with the strain of acceleration/cornering but saying that i would go for the 'w' rated ones..
also if you do ever have an accident the insurance chappy [if he's a jobsworth] might pick up the fact that you have in-correct tyres on ....

+1.  Must be same or better, and must have the correct weight rating too (the numbers before the speed rating).  Eg if 107 fitted then 107 must be used, not 105 as this has a lower weight rating.  Approved sizes and ratings are on the tyre pressure label on the B pillar.
