Why would you do that? Don't think we have seen the last of the winter yet ...

Hold off a couple of weeks while temps are still low.

Got lazy today but temps are quoted to be:
Mon 8, Tues 9, Wed 10, Thu 12 and Fri 9
Am tempted though. Agree it's early in the winter season but just not sure worth them staying on where I am.

That's still closer to the sweet spot for Winter rather than Sumer tyres.....and they don't have serious wear issues until approaching 20C.....and we don't get that very often..
Given the amount of rain in the forecast I'd keep them on.

Re: X5 in the snow: what's the consensus?
More snow to come in Feb and apparently worse than the last lot.
Re: X5 in the snow: what's the consensus?
I was pleasantly surprised last week. Driving from Devon to London, fairly heavy snowfall around 8pm in the vicinity of Taunton had the M5 down to one lane, except for the kamikaze pilots.
Cut across from Taunton to pick up the A303 and was in a line of traffic, probably ten cars back. As we went uphill, the line slowed to an eventual stop on the hill.
After a short wait, with no oncoming traffic, I hillstarted no problem and drove up the hill, passing the stationary cars. The one at the front, a VW Passat, was doing neat front wheel spins, trying to move off, but he was having no joy at all. I felt really smug I have to say, and all on 275s front and 315s rear, 20s !
After reading the experiences here, I was dubious about setting out, but all was well and I was suitably impressed. I was driving gently and as smoothly as possible.

Oooohhhh, ok I'll keep em on. I hate the look of em and want them off double-time! But if snow happens I don't want to get caught out....

I've run both the OE 20" 168's and E71 20" 259's and 22" AC Schnitzer's through previous winters without any real difficulties but do admit the 18" BBS's with Continental Winters do procide more stability and a far better ride. Oh and of course, did I mention it's a great excuse to run something different and buy new alloys.....LOL

I too have quite a hard Finance Director to contend with but with clever use of Chief Exec buzz words I can normally steer the ship in the right way....PMSL.

I had no issues with my standard 20's with Toyo's all round.
At the end of the day we are driving luxury SUV's and not diff locked landy's running skinnies. So treat the car that way and you will be pleasantly surprised.
I would love to get a set of winters past financial control, but as we really do not need to go out in the snow as we can walk to work (no matter how much I want too and as it is fun), we just can't justify it. I know the whole 'one slide could cost you more than a set of wheels' argument but the car should be quite safe in the garage. In an ideal world I would get some, but until that day....

Re: X5 in the snow: what's the consensus?
As I live in a rural area, mobility is very important, so when looking to buy the X6 a set of winter wheels was placed on the must have list to ensure the budget covered them. Our roads don't get gritted or ploughed and in the past we have had snow and ice on he ground for eights weeks of the winter.
Now for the first time ever the roads where ploughed! Still took a couple of days and as we live at the top of a step hill winter tyres will always be a requirement for me, even this morning we awoke to frost and ice on the roads.
As for driving in the snow, the car was excellent, very sure footed and felt 'normal' with non of the vagueness experienced when driving in snowy conditions on non winter tyres.
