Not again

Post by PeterL » Fri Jan 25, 2013 11:43 pm

Just put £77 of unleaded in the Audi which is a diesel.  Now got to wait for someone to come and empty it which they are charging me £180 for the pleasure.  Then I have to fill up with Diesel which will be £140.

mrs did this to my landcruiser before and ran it till it stopped. fortunately only 30L or so.. topped it up with diesel and cranked the engine real hard and it had started (i was working away this was her cousin's doing to help!!)

i read about it at that time and from memory it was AA i think, that he had picked this up from - strategy was to bring the ratio to less than 10% petrol by filling it up.

later that weekend for good measure i emptied the tank from a drain hole at the bottom and filled it up with diesel again.

car ran for years after that never a prob with the engine..

so total cost was only teh fuel wasted.

At least you realised before driving off.  I was in our BMW Dealer a few years back and they had a 5-er in the workshop after it was filled and driven.  The bill was enormous as it damaged the injection system wrecking the pumps and injectors - petrol dissolved all the seal lubricants - and the engine was affected too.

I thought the Q7 had an anti-misfuelling type filler?  Or maybe the garage doesn't have differentiated nozzles.

But ouch!

something like this seems a good idea

http://www.solodiesel.co.uk/index.asp

not helped anymore by the choice of multi-colour pumps available at some petrol stations

One advantage of having an 'all diesel' fleet.  Never pick up the wrong nozzle in a moment of distraction.

What with a diesel car and van im more worried about filling the motorbike up with diesel......nothing there to restrict which size of pump goes in

Indeed the second time, rushing something so simple.  At least I didn't fill up this time.
