Until I get to take some good pics, here is a bad one ) This was a stop off on the drive home saturday when we collected what many of my friend's have termed the 'silver beast!'

Ref the fuel filler cap sounds as if it needs a bit of lube- I find Mr Sheen is great for easing plastic parts. Or of course silicone spray!
I had a quick look at the push button part and it looks as if you would have to remove the rubber boot to get to the 'mechanism' part. Once removed just spray away and it should become a bit more free.
