Secondary air pump

Post by scooby1doo1 » Mon Jan 21, 2013 7:19 pm

Well I'm just guessing at the minute, but yesterday the engine light came on,
Idle was very lumpy on tick over upto about 2k revs, sounds like its miss firing.
You can feel the car shaking while at the wheel, seems worse inside.
Under the bonnet you can here air pretty loud, it hard to say but sounds like manifold area.
After some googling I came up with the above cause, but as you can here air the pump must be ok.
No search on this forum brought back any other members with the said fault.
Next door was going to read the codes, but this will now be done tom.
But what I read if a pipe as split or popped off, it's a real pain and expensive to fix

Give us a clue, what engine do you have? I'm guessing a petrol version.
Common problem with the petrols is split intake hoses. check where the pipe splits off towards the idle valve.
Another problem has been a split intake manifold, reports of a Woooshing noise on acceleration.
Couldjust be a small vaccuum hose, split or adrift.
One way to check the intake is to spray easy start over the suspect hose, if the engine revs up when the easy start is sucked in, you have found the split.

Yes petrol 3.0i
With just lifting the bonnet all looks ok, but had a bit of snow and was snowing hard all day so not looked real good.
Deff an air leak with the sound, but unsure if its blowing or sucking excuse the wording.
I'm not sure where to look TBH, as I stand in front if the car bonnet open its coming from centre right if that makes sense.

I would recommend you remove the plastic engine cover, its only a five minuite job, just a few screws, it may reveal where your leak is, you will be able to see the intake pipework as well as the plastic manifold.
If its a blowing noise it would be after the turbo, Ie aftercooler pipework, or split aftercooler, manifold etc.

No turbo.....it's a 3.0i

If it's RHS of the engine then inlet manifold structure is the first to look for.  As suggested, get the engine cover off to give a clearer view.  You can then trace the pipework.  using a torch and make-up mirror can help you see into the awkward places.  Not having the TIS website anymore is a pain as it had all the 'how to' instructions....

Not been able to plug it in today to get codes, but I had the cover off check for spilt pipes, the DISA flap is fine well I think it is.
I removed the 3 40T bolts but the dam thing wunt come off, but the arm had resistance so unless the flaps fell off should be fine. Started engine and put my hand around to see if any air leaks could be found that way, but nothing.
If next door don't plug it in in the morning it's going to the garage.
