BMW Employee / Family Scheme

Post by toneus » Fri Jan 18, 2013 7:57 pm

If you have a relation working for BMW in the UK you could get a 16% discount on Minis and 19% discount on any of the BMW range. This is great but as we found out has some drawbacks.

My brother works for Nissan in Sunderland. When I was buying a Nissan NV200 Combi van he kindly got me a discount code. What you do, is go to a Nissan dealer, and use the code to get the requisite discount from the dealer. The dealer then reclaims the difference from Nissan.

After going through this process I thought this was the norm, and unfortunatley realised that I'd been very poor in negotiating with the Nissan dealer. The discount code applies to the price you've agreed with the dealer, not the list price. So I got no extra discount from the dealer for this NV200.

So when we were interested in a BMW as my brother in law works for them and we were eligible for a discount, we thought the process would be the same. As we didn't want to compromise our negotiating position, we didn't mention to the dealer that we would be entitled to a discount. After test drives of X3 and X5 courtesy of the superb Donna at Oxford BMW we decided we'd go for the X5, only to discover that the BMW employee scheme cuts out the dealers! Instead you buy the vehicle direct from BMW.

As a result you get no dealer support, and us remaining with the guilt of wasting someones time. It seems sad, that somebody that has successfully sold us on an X5 gets no commission or recognition for this.

Just saying.

Don't be too hard on yourself.  Think of all the people who go down the High Street, look at/twiddle with items, then go home and buy them cheaper on the net.
