Am quite surprised though mogsyman it was really that bad. [/quote]

To be fair though he doesn't know how to drive !

Took the RS out today and found a big empty car park and switched everything.

I think the dog felt a bit sick afterwards though !

After previous experience in E53 and reading posts on here I was very weary of taking the E70 out in the snow. Now bearing in mind it's been snowing heavily in the Midlands and the fact my X doesn't have winter tyres...it handled brilliantly. Not a single issue other than slight spin when getting back up the drive. So if you're E70 is crap in the snow, it has a problem specific to the car. Don't buy the 'X5s are rubbish in the snow' anymore!

Does this apply to the E53s too and is this how you should do it?

1) Suspect snow issues
2) Gearbox in PARK (or neutral?)
3) Press DSC button once and a light comes on the dash
4) Power somehow manged differently?
5) Ignition off and on again will return to normal too?

According to the manual, no 'DTC' system fitted on the E70 models onwards is fitted to the E53, but all you need to do is press the DSC button to enable the equivalent snow mode, and press it again to turn the DSC back on.  It's only supposed to be used for short periods.

It appears that on the E53 the button turns the whole system off, but the E70/71 have an intermediate mode which BMW call DTC.

you'd think these days that the car would detect snow based on temperature, humidty, wheel slip, relative velocity and just figure it out.

Thanks for the tip though

For fear if sounding like a rail employee I bet it depend on the type of snow!

To be fair, the car performed very well on the road/minor side roads that still had snow on them.

Anyone familiar with Chandlers Angmering will know the exit from their compound is a slope somewhere around 30 degrees and also having a slight slope across as well to make it more interesting and that's where the X failed.

No chance coming out backwards (full car park, nowhere to turn and facing the wrong way) and the only to get out was to do a 150 point turn and then gun it and it wasn't a problem. The Warrior would have crawled out at a walking pace either forwards or backwards and not have to take a run up!

I was impressed with my E70 in the snow.  Running 20" Sport wheels & normal tyres & it really was good.    Left  the RWD 1 Series on the drive though as that has no traction at all on ice or snow.
