Hi does anyone have any info. on how to remove the external pieces of trim from around the side doors and windows on a X5 E53 model?

You mean the gloss black bits?

Bottom horizontal ones are clipped on - so will prise off, but be ULTRA careful. It's a plastic that will not go back into shape if you bend it. And they are mega expensive to replace.

The top bits around the window will need to be got at from the inside of the door. Door card off, top inside surrounds off, rubber round the window out, 3 screws out, then the metal clips will let you pull the surround out  - be careful of the 3 push-in connectors near the mirror and one at the other end. All of it is delicate work with minimum force.
