New build issue

Has anyone had any experience of having a new car delivered where some options were missed during manufacture?

Car was delivered in Sep 11 but only just picked up things are not right. Dealer confirmed issue was with the factory not the order. Also confirmed its not something that can be retrofitted (or at least that's what BMW's stance is).

Never been the position of being able to order or own a brand new motor so can't comment. But if its an issue at the factory and not with you/order then isn't it a matter of BMW having to now build another to spec and that was paid for and replace the one you have?

It's a contract at the end of the day.

That should have been picked up on the PDI as they're supposed to check the build sheet against the order.  What is missing?

I had an item missed on the order, and that can't be retroffited by BMW - although it can in reality it's just there is no official kit offered.  In my case the Salesman did not understand the mobile interconnection options and the wrong USB subsystem was fitted meaning the smart-phone integration is incomplete.  All it needs is a second USB cable run to the Combox and a new phone cradle unit and a software change.  Not difficult, but not available from BMW.

I believe under current law you have 6 months to reject the car.  Our illustrious Government want to reduce it to 30 days for cars!!  Garage has to have the 'opportunity' to put it right or refund and replace.

Thanks, useful info on the 6 month window.  I will look into that in detail.  My stance is I just want the options we ordered, not looking for compensation. If they can't do a retrofit, then rebuild may be the only option...

Over the Christmas break, I'd spent some time looking at a couple of things, one was how enable the iPhone SMS integration with the iDrive and the other was how to rename imported CD's so they don't just show up as "Audio CD 1 - Track 1".  Figured out how to do the CD name update over the internet on my X5, but my wife's X1 LCI didn't have the option.  I originally thought that it must be that it hadn't been registered for BMW Assist / ConnectedDrive so I submitted a request to register it on Sunday.

Spoke to BMW Customer Services yesterday and the request had been rejected as 612 - BMW Assist and 616 - BMW Assist Online Portal were not installed on the car.  I went through the order sheet and it was part of 7KB - Media Pack Professional (Sat Nav etc) so I couldn't see how these £0 options could be missing?  Checked the online configurator and indeed, it won't let you deselect it if you have the Media Pack Pro (and why would you?!).  Phoned the dealer and they confirmed the same.

This leaves the car in a bit of a weird state as you have other functionality which can never work such as not being able to send routes to the car from the website portal.  The biggest issue though for me is that the SOS button is missing, so I assume this also means the automatic call to the emergency services when the airbag deploys is also not there.

Sounds like I may be lucky that I spotted it before the 1st March when the 6 month window passed...

They have not supplied you with the item you ordered.  Dealer just as much to blame as they should test all this at PDI and reject vehicle directly.

Hope you get it sorted.  My preference would be to insist on having them; they can hardly refund you the cost of the items when they are a zero cost integral part of an already selected option(!)

Incidentally, when I had a smack in my 40d, the airbag did not go off (sideswiped on a roundabout by someone in wrong lane) but the engine did cut itself off and the BMW lady called to see if I was alright (scared the crap out of me hearing that!)

id say play hardball and try to get it resolved. its their responsibility not yours to deliver the order they accepted.

Elementary my dear Dr Watson - well 'Telematics' at least Jay...

From about 2005 onwards BMW started fitting some of their cars with a telematics system that works alongside the Assist system and GPS to report an accident automatically should certain sensors be triggered.  The later versions of the TCU and now Combox have a built in SIM card effectively meaning they are a mobile phone. 

As long as you pay for the annual Assist service the car, if triggered, will report your location back to BMW, and they if necessary can call the Emergency Service and give your location to them should you be unable to respond due to injury.  But as snipez says, it's well weird having the car talk to you!! :blink:

Mrs X5Sport did something wrong in her E46 once and had a very nice lady from BMW call her and ask her if the was OK, or needed the blue light brigade..... :-[

Do feel for you.  Not nice experience, you expect a professional level of service when you spend the type of money a X5 costs.  The most likely outcome will be you getting the cost of the incomplete options refunded to you plus a token gesture of free service, some freebies, etc.

Getting the car replaced after 12+ months is unlikely.  While the PDI should pick it up, you are on leagally shaky ground due to the time elapse in noticing options missing.

The only other option is trading the car back in for a new build and push for extra on a deal due to this issue.

As a side note, on my own car it has the third row seats, its on the delivery paperwork, but when I bought a BMW child seat a few months ago the parts dept says the 3rd option is not recorded on their system  ???  & that was the suppling dealer.
