New year - Angel Eye Upgrade

Post by psychosis » Fri Jan 04, 2013 2:41 pm

Having finally got my interior sorted next step was the angel eyes. Eventually (after far too many changes of mind) went for the Mtec ver3.0. Quite happy with the results and pictures below comparing original to Mtec

Please excuse iPhone pics.

As a side note although the plugs should only fit one way due to the shape the polarity was wrong and initially these wouldn't work until I turned the plug.

I had the same problem with my Hids. You would expect the brown wire to be live and go to the red wire in the hids plug, but its the yellow wire !!! and the brown wire is the neutral.
A few members have fitted them recently and said that they are faulty and sent them back.
I got the meter out and checked, then swapped over wires before they would work.
Same with the number plate LED's, they will only work one way round.
People ,be aware when fitting LED's and hids, they are polarity concious, and BMW wiring loom colours are not always what you would expect, check with a meter if you have a problem, before returning  them.

'Brown' has been the colour for DC based vehicle negative (ground/earth) in Europe for years and years - certainly 30+ years from my working on all sorts of cars over the decades (5 now  :-[ - cue pvr et al and an 'old git' comment)  - but it's easy to make a (wrong) assumption for matching the 'live' side of a mains powered system which for some reason is brown...though I know not why.

New year - Angel Eye Upgrade

I will phone the supplier on Monday as these should really be plug and play. The original connection on the BMW loom has 2 corners beveled so should only connect one way. I have had to force the socket into the LED the wrong way. It's not a deal breaker and the connection is behind the sealed cover so safe from elements. I'll probably remake the wires when I'm back at work so the plug fits correctly.

Bought these from HIDS-Direct. They use 6w Cree LEDs and the pictures don't show how much of an improvement these are.

I suppose one of the advantages (maybe the only one!) of living near Manchester is its always overcast so they always look great ;). To be honest I wasn't expecting them to be as good as they are.
