Lapland - Levi, Finland

Guys, thought i'd share some  ..

just back from a fantastic holiday to Lapland;.. Levi, Finland - my fam and a mates fam, kids and adults both enjoyed alike..

Temperature was arctic! dropped to -30c one day, even the cameras stopped working. camera literally 'froze' when taken indoors uncovered - big mistake!

and a slightly different hotel, compared to the holiday inn i might be in tomorrow night 








only alcoholic drinks of course (with a far below freezing point)!



very expensive though - could have put a few £k into the next car.. but wtf, life's what you live..

Wow, looks like you had a fantastic time.  The wife would love to do the Lapland visit, but only for the day!  I have tried to get her to look at the five day package that includes all the different styles of travel you seem to have experienced.  I know it's very expensive but as you say, what the hell, it's a once in a lifetime trip.  :xmasgrin:

thing is,.. its not worth the trouble and money for just one day.

its like buying the options when you buy a car.. got to have them, no good without them..

I better add that to the 'future plans' lists for 'Peanut', though it will be a few years yet.....

Looks like a lot of fun....unless you're a camera!!  Better pack the insulation kit for mine then..

It's always been on our to do list but the cost is very prohibitive and the -30degrees to is another

camera - i was trying to video the husky ride (mind u they ride pretty fast through the jungle track!) camera stopped functioning i had to pull the battery out to switch it off. (had to remove the glove for which i suffered about half hr more)

took the camera inside the hut later, condensation formed fast and they it quickly froze and the camera became white!! i thought that was the end of it!!

what's an insulation kit for a cam? basically canon says to seal inside a polythene bag when taking inside; which i ignored and thought i paid the price!

kids - yeah can't enjoy if too small, worst is they can't tell when their fingers and toes are freezing. my lil one is 4.

-30c was good, apparently it can be as bad as -45c!! but then it 'rises' to about -10c too )

One of These Portabrace type jobbies.  The 5D Mk3 works down to -40C in theory.  I use a plastic bag to seal the camera from heat/cold/humidity for about 30 mins to let it acclimatise - the tropics are very bad news for humidity in combination with air conditioning - and in cold conditions I would keep a spare set of batteries warm in an easy to get to inside pocket.

I haven't done a cold weather shooting for a while, and certainly not that cold since the days of film (yes pvr I am that old!!) but I do have an old wool 'sniper glove' that allows me to get my pinkies out to do things without exposing the whole hand etc.
