X5 Car Tax (pre 2006)

Post by Pete » Wed Oct 06, 2010 8:04 pm

Please can somebody clear something up for me. Is the price for car tax for pre 2006 models increasing so that it becomes in line with the post 2006 models as of next April (£400+)?
Thanks.

Not that I am aware of - got any articles saying so? This happened a while back and then they backed off. Currently any car which would 'otherwise' fall into the higher tax brackets (they have split them out further) will only increase to £245 (off the top of my head) as long as it was registered BEFORE 23rd March 2006.

I'm not aware of any changes to the current taxing system and nothing is shown here http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Ow ... G_10012524 as to future changes.

I was getting my car washed and the guy there seemed adamant that it was increasing as of next April but I said I was certain that it wasn't. He had a glasses guide or something and was trying to show me a table with the emissions and rates but I was sure that he just had his wires crossed. I do seem to remember something was mentioned a couple of years back regarding a much higher rate for higher emmisions vehicles but I vaguely remember that it was put on hold before the election campaigns got underway.

It's just niggling at me now though.

Any car registered after April 2006 has the high tax band, nothing before that date.

Well, looks like I'll still be able to afford meat for dinner every other Sunday then.

X5's ,(& all cars over 1549cc), registered before 1/3/01 pay non emissions based rate of £205 p/a.

All X5's registered between 1/3/01 & 22/3/06 pay Band K rate of £225 p/a.

After 22/3/06 its the silly money over £400.

Band k was implemeted after a backlash from owners angered at massive retrospective hikes, (apparently some sad folk posted on newspaper websites, wrote to MP's & incited more militant others to act ....Awful behaviour- an absolute disgrace  )

The post backlash decision was to only apply highest rates to cars registred after 3/06 albeit official line at the time was the plans had been suspended. Since then a new team are in charge.........Dave's section of the Clegons aren't so "anti-motorist" as Labour, (exampled by multi Gatsos off & M4 bus lane going), but we are in tough times & nothing is guaranteed - Not sure if such detailed issues would feature in the spending review at end of the month.

as i understood it, the x5's pre 22/3/06 were only TEMPORARILY dropped into band K for 2 years, and this ends 1st april 2011 when, barring any government intervention, they will revert to the higher band of the post 22/3/06 cars.
hence unless anything changes, i intend to cash in my old tax disc end feb 2011 and 1st march buy another 12 months at the lower rate.

You sure? I would be interested to see a link for that.

After the uproar of any old 2001 car ending up with road tax higher then their value, I thought it was dropped completely.

This bit is relevant I think:

>>

The November 2008 pre-budget statement included the statement that cars emitting over 225g/km and first registered between 1 March 2001 and 23 March 2006 will now go into band 'K', at least until 2010/11. Under the earlier proposals (March 2008 Budget) these cars would have moved into band 'L' or 'M' depending on official CO2 emissions.

>>

It will stay there ...

Just got my renewal through. £425 for twelve months!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Registered 26th March 2006. I knew this particular 'quirk' in the road fund licence charge when i purchased the car so it doesnt come as a surprise. still hurts a bit when the car was registered this close to the 23rd.

Anything registered before the 23RD MARCH 2006 will stay the same. So my 4.6is is and will remain band K.
