Climate control query

Post by Bob » Sat Nov 24, 2012 5:55 am

Forgive me if this is answered in manual but haven't picked up car yet. On test drive couldn't seem to sync driver and passenger side temps, ie if u change driver's side it'd change passenger too.
Saleswoman didn't think it was possible.
As I've specced 4zone climate does that mean I'd have to adjust each zone individually?!
Seems crazy if u do
Thanks

Will have to have a look but i dont think the drivers and passenger sides sync.  There is a setting in the idrive that links the rear controls to the drivers setting but the minute you touch the rear controls it de activates it.

Discovered this as couldnt work out why i was so hot all the time and found the rears were set on 30c!

No they don't sync if it's a 4-zone system - not much point in having a 4-zone independently controlled system if it was all locked together.

What you can do though is set the temps as you want them for all the zones and then that data is stored on the key so it will set the temps to that when the key is used.  My wife and I use different keys which have different settings for front/rear temps, radio channels, seats, nav settings, mirror settings and a few other options.  That should solve the issue.  :)

I had the same with my X6 where the temps in the back were 30C until I found the right setting in the iDrive and now they're synced with the driver.....until as Squeaky says, someone pushes a button!  The new front settings will get stored in the key again though... :ok:

Was thinking of specking 4  zone climate on next car due  2013, but forgive me i it sounds daft, i understand that its nice to have individual  climate  air control in the  foot well but after a  few mins  isnt the entire cabin at the same temp ?  Is it an extra  worth paying for ??  Bit like  sitting in row  44 on  a Boeing  777  and expecting you to have  individual  climate control,  well you can't , not even in first class, i know,  im at the front pushing the buttons  for cabin air temp and recirculation  and you all get  the same !!  Cleaner at the front and filtered again at the front ( posh parts )  ! and the  back cabin ie  economy  tends to get  fumes  of the engines  on the older planes thrown in for free !  Next time  you sit in  a plane getting di iced  the smell of iso propanol  de icer wafts into the cabin quite nicely.  I think some BMW  anti ice  additives  smell the same  for - 15 temps as well !
May be your  X5 climate controls are off an early 757  or  a  Dornier  more like !
Past Bm 's    M 6 ( 1986 ) ( all time favourite in 1980s  so rare  !),  M3x  2 .  540 , 3 series  loads ... X 5  x 3 .   , 2006 X 5  M Sport,   2009 D M sport in white  , Now  2011 X 5  4 D M Sport in white !
Ivory leather piped in black, Panoramic roof, camera x3 .

I couldn't see 4 zone controls working so didn't spec it on mine?  Also wonder if it bumps up fuel consumption if you have different temps set around the car, as the aircon will have to work harder for those that want it cooler.

Climate control query

Main reason I specced it was according to brochure you get some extra air vents in the back with it. I thought a big car with 2 very young children in back it might be nice for them. Clearly I'm not expecting them to control the temp themselves!
Having said that I'm not sure either if it was worth it. Too late as car being assembled as we speak.
I'll tell you if it's any good in Jan/Feb!

It's all done with heat exchangers and mixer valves so I would think it makes little difference to fuel use age.  What might is the 9 different fans for just the front!!

4-zone actually works quite well as the vents/inlets are quite close to each user......unlike those in a B777 where being in the tail end means you also get everyone's 'tail end' emissions too...... :'(. Why else do you think they fly around slightly nose high?  Nothing to do with aerodynamics, more about making sure the two sitting on the sheepskin covered seats up front don't get gassed.... :)) :))

Well it does roll downhill...... :puke:

@ Bob, must admit another reason I didn't go for 4 zone was my two young, and very destructive, young boys - don't think it would last long at their feet! Hope you find it helpful though ...

@ X5Sport, how the heck do you know about heat exchangers being used and 9 fans at the front?  You should get out more  >:D. Interesting though .....  :))

That had crossed my mind TBH, but hoping 2 little girls will be better behaved!

Coz I had a fan bearing fail under warranty (sounded like a tortured hamster) and the BMW Tech told how much of a nightmare it was to change - half the dash  & tunnel mounted bits had to come out apparently.  Took em three days to get it out and back.

I would not have known (or cared) otherwise.... :))

Settings > Climate > Rear Climate and tick the 'Use Driver's Settings' box is the one I think.  You can also switch rear climate off from there too.  Assume you have 4-zone?
